Brisbane's Israel Folau has been named the best recruit of the 2009 NRL season in an exclusive poll for today's edition of Rugby League Week magazine - and Shannon Hegarty the worst.
RLW staff were asked to rank their best buys and their worst for the annual feature, with St George Illawarra and the Bulldogs fairing best while Melbourne didn't have a man in the top 30.
After disgraced Arana Taumata was disqualified from the list of 10 players with a lot to prove this year, North Queensland's Hegarty won the unwanted honour of being the most questionable buy of 2009 due to his advancing years and limited appearances at South Sydney last year.
Elsewhere, Matthew Johns weighs into the Benji Marshall furore in his first column of the year - and is outspokenly opposed to the NRL's stand against a stint in Japanese rugby union.
We reveal Wayne Bennett's fury at former club Brisbane making an approach to big St George Illawarra prop Justin Poore while Todd Carney's destination has been narrowed to two teams - both in Sydney.
And the battle for control of Manly takes a new twist with the Penn faction helping attract a $1.6 million windfall for the club, putting pressure on the Delmege camp.
