Heremaia out for another three months
Fri March 30, 2012
Hull FC's new hooker Aaron Heremaia will have to wait at least another three months to make his Stobart Super League debut after being told he needs to have an operation on his neck.

The 29-year-old, who joined the Black and Whites in the close season from New Zealand Warriors, damaged a disc in his spine during the club's pre-season friendly against Hull KR.

He was hoping to make his comeback against Bradford Bulls on Friday, but suffered a setback while waiting for final clearance.

"We have looked at a number of ways to get Aaron back," said coach Peter Gentle. "He has felt good and made progress and even trained with us with a view to returning this week.

"However, we had a final sign-off with the medical staff and specialist this week and, with his injury being so close to his spinal cord, any wrong knock or tackle during a game could do irreparable damage and it's simply not worth it.

"We'll get him in for an operation and straight into rehab and hopefully have him back and fresh and ready to go for the final three months of the season."

Meanwhile, Hull will be without prop Sam Moa for the foreseeable future after he returned home to Australia on compassionate grounds.

"Some things are more important than footy and Sam needed to return home to be with his family," said Gentle. "We understand that and will make sure we're there to support him through a difficult time and look forward to having him back when he is ready."

With full-back Wade McKinnon joining Mark O'Meley and Joe Westerman on the sidelines after picking up a groin injury in last Sunday's win over Castleford Tigers, Gentle could hand debuts to Chris Green and Liam Kent against Bradford.

"We are doing it tough at the minute but we can't complain," added Gentle. "This is just a period every club will go through at some stage in the season and our time is now.

"This is what having a good competitive squad is all about and it's exciting to give some young talent a chance. We've had some young guys chomping at the bit to get in the side."

England international centre Kirk Yeaman is ahead of schedule in his recovery from foot surgery and has been provisionally included in the squad for Friday's game.

Hull FC help out at Sport Relief campaign

Some unsuspecting donators to last night's Sport Relief had a surprise when their call was answered by Hull FC stars Danny Houghton and Aaron Heremaia.

The Black and Whites have thrown their weight behind this year's Sport Relief campaign as part of a competition wide initiative in Super League and their support has been felt on a national scale, including manning the phone lines for the live BBC telethon as well as appearing on children's television.

England Knights star Houghton, who has also posed naked for this year's campaign, and last season's NRL Grand Finalist Heremaia gave up their time to answer calls for Friday night's multi-million pound fundraising broadcast.

Meanwhile a star-studded line-up of team mates Wade McKinnon, Mark O'Meley, Sam Moa and head coach Peter Gentle were also involved in a CBBC Sport Relief special on Thursday evening, surprising young rugby fan Shauna, who has been caring for her sick mother.

As well as that, the club have also auctioned off signed Sports Relief memorabilia, Hull FC shirts and match day tickets and hospitality via their official eBay site and Twit Relief, had a special Sports Relief feature on their unique online television service 'Airlie Night Live' and this coming Sunday will also wear specially commissioned red and white socks at their game against Castleford Tigers.

And the fun doesn't stop this weekend either! Whilst the Sport Relief partnership will be celebrated this weekend, the fundraising will continue well into the year with plans already afoot for a players v coaches culinary challenge at the Mercure Royal Hotel in Hull, as well as a special charity touch rugby competition that will be announced in the near future.

Speaking between answering calls, FC's Houghton said, "This is the least we could do knowing that all the money raised tonight and through the year will make a real difference to many people.

"You forget how fortunate you are to be doing something you love such as playing professional sport when others aren't always as lucky and life isn't always as straightforward, so this is our way of giving a little bit back, helping those people out and giving them the chance to enjoy and experience some of things we take for granted and enjoy so much."

Meanwhile, Hull FC's Head of Communications, Media & Marketing, James Clark, also added, "Sport Relief is a fantastic cause and it has been great to see not just our players, but all those involved at the other 14 Super League club's all coming together to get behind this great project.

"Sport Relief promotes many of the messages that we also like to support as a club and we are keen to play our part.

"Whilst our club's charity of the year, Help for Heroes, is still a major part of our current focus, we wanted to ensure that everyone at the club - players, coaches and staff - were all united in helping raise awareness of Sport Relief and the causes they support as well as helping generate as much money as possible.

"Through sport, we can influence and enhance the lives of a great number of people and hopefully by Hull FC playing just a small part in that alongside the thousands upon thousands of other fundraisers, we'll have gone a long way to making a real difference where it matters."
