Serbian train-on squad announced
Thu September 22, 2011
by Phil Caplan
Wakefield back rower Liam Higgins is the surprise inclusion in Serbia's 45-man train-on squad announced for this autumn's 2013 World Cup European Zone Qualifiers.

National head coach Marko Jankovic has named mainly domestic club players, with the majority having already earned caps in two international competitions in 2009 and 2010.

The list is dominated by Dorcol Spiders, 14 players coming from the nine-time champions. However, almost all the other clubs in the Serbian competition are represented, illustrating the growing depth.

Jankovic is committed to promoting youth, "Our opponents in the qualifications have already announced their train-on squads which are noticeable by the numerous famous rugby league names included," he said.

"It is going to be very interesting and promises to be a quality tournament. However, we are relying on our own strength. The train-on squad integrates names involved in last year's European Shield and this year's international warm-up matches, as well as several young players that I believe will be the future backbone of the national team. It is too early to speak about the final list, but for sure, whoever appears in it has to be prepared for three consecutive weeks of high-quality games."

Serbia plays its last warm-up game on 30th September in Belgrade against Ukraine. The World Cup qualifying campaign kicks off on 16th October in Lebanon. After the match in Tripoli, the team fly back home to host Italy on 23rd October and Russia six days later.

Castleford sign Hull FC prop Liam Higgins
Thu August 31, 2006
by Matthew O'Neill
Castleford have signed Hull FC prop forward Liam Higgins on a two-year deal for the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

Higgins is a product of the Hull FC Academy side and has just made five Super League appearances as a replacement this season.

The 23-year-old was out of action for several weeks after suffering from mumps.

Higgins said, "This will be a new challenge for me. I have missed a good chunk of this season with illness but that is fully behind me and I'm looking to kick on next year with the Tigers."

Meanwhile, in team news, Castleford have named their 20-man squad for Saturdays big match with Harlequins, and welcome back Danny Sculthorpe and Richard Fletcher who missed our last match with shoulder problems, and Luke Dyer who has been missing for the last 3 Tigers outings.

Only Ben Roarty, who has a leg injury, and long-term casualty Waine Pryce didn't come into the reckoning when coach Terry Matterson selected his squad. The trio returning replace youngsters Jason Payne, Michael Knowles and Grant Edwards who were in the original 20 for the Tigers last match against Bradford.

The 20-man squad is - Michael Platt, Michael Shenton, Luke Dyer, Paul Handforth, Andy Kain, Danny Sculthorpe, Andrew Henderson, Danny Nutley, Deon Bird, Craig Huby, Richard Fletcher, Gray Viane, Richard Fa'aoso, Willie Manu, Ryan McGoldrick, Danny Ward, Brad Davis, Peter Lupton, Adam Fletcher, Danny Brough.
