Source: www.parraeels.com.auThe Pirtek Parramatta Eels will get straight into the "hard yakka" in their first week of pre-season training when they take to construction, landscaping and car wash sites around Sydney from tomorrow.
The Eels' NRL squad will train in the early mornings before splitting up into groups for a full day's work at various sites before returning to Parramatta Stadium at the end of each day for a second evening training session.
The week-long "Back to Work" program will see the likes of captain Nathan Hindmarsh, Tim Mannah, Luke Burt, Jarryd Hayne and new recruits Chris Sandow, Esi Tonga and Ben Roberts get their hands dirty.
Pirtek Eels education officer Kevin Wise said the program was more than just a different take on the usual pre-season shape-up.
"It's a great way of showing how hard people work each day to make a living," Wise said.
"It's also about showing the guys what's out there in terms of opportunities after footy.
"It might also help remind them to take advantage of our education programs so they're able to attain the qualifications needed to secure the job they want when their careers end.
"We've got a number of guys working next week in industries they're already working in: for example, Peni Terepo is an apprentice butcher, and Justin Poore is a plumber."
Never one to shirk the hard yards on the field or training paddock, Eels skipper Nathan Hindmarsh said he was looking forward to the gruelling schedule.
"For a lot of us, full time training has been our lives and we've never had to work a normal job," Hindmarsh said.
"I'm sure it'll be an eye opener for a lot of guys - it's definitely something I've never done.
"Our supporters work hard every day and are the ones buying the tickets to see us play - they're the lifeblood of our game.
"I think it'll be a really good experience to see how hard everyone else works each day - sometimes in footy you can get caught up in your own bubble, so this is a good grounder for the boys."
Players working on construction sites this week will today complete their white card certification. Companies assisting with the program include Dyldam, CABE Construction, Stone Will, Tiki Building and Sydney Car Wash.

Parramatta's Nathan Hindmarsh will captain the 2011 Prime Minister's XIII announced today to play Papua New Guinea in Lae on Sunday week (Sept 25), as part of a three-day visit to highlight the strong partnership between the two countries and deliver critical health and social messages to the local community.
The Prime Minister the Hon. Julia Gillard MP's Prime Minister's XIII features a host of NRL stars including Matt Bowen (Cowboys), Mitchell Pearce (Roosters), David Shillington (Raiders), Ben Barba (Bulldogs), Preston Campbell (Titans) and Cronulla Sharks front-rower's Luke Douglas and Kade Snowden.
The match brings the Australian Rugby League's Prime Minister's XIII and PNG Kumuls together with the community to talk about the importance of respect for the individual and the community.
The Prime Minister the Hon. Julia Gillard says she is looking forward to hearing the outcome of the game.
"This match promises to be a great game and I know both sides will be out to win.
"But regardless of the outcome, I'm sure both teams will do their countries' proud.
The match will be played at Lae Rugby League Ground and is the culmination of a series of activities in conjunction with AusAID and the Papua New Guinea Rugby League.
Players will participate in a signing session in Cairns on Thursday week (Sept 22) as well as conduct school clinics in Lae where they will be talking to children on such topics as healthy lifestyles, respect and responsibility and playing by the rules.
ARL Chief Executive Officer, Mr Geoff Carr, says the Prime Minister's tour is one of the most important on the international calendar.
"Rugby League is the national sport of PNG and our team will be up for a tough match," Mr Carr said.
"However the match is only secondary to our players using the trip to deliver messages like stopping violence against women, respect for match officials and healthy lifestyles.
"Mal Meninga is very passionate about Rugby League in PNG and I am sure all the selected players will share his passion once they experience the Papua New Guinean culture."
