Hodgson to return home to Rovers
Wed July 20, 2011
Source: http://www.hullkr.co.uk

Huddersfield Giants winger David Hodgson will join Hull Kingston Rovers on a three-year deal from the beginning of the 2012 campaign.

The former Wigan Warrior is one of Super League's most prolific finishers, averaging almost a try in every other game in a career that has spanned over 300 first grade appearances for the Giants, Warriors, Salford City Reds and Halifax.

Hodgson has representative honours to his name with both Great Britain and England and the move signals a return to the city where he grew up having played for Hull Boys Club as an amateur and attending Andrew Marvell School in east Hull.

After four years at the Galpharm Stadium, Hodgson is excited for the new challenge that lies ahead of him at Craven Park in 2012 enabling him to return to his roots.

"It's where I'm from and I'm really looking forward to getting the chance to play for my hometown team," said Hodgson.

"As a kid playing for Hull Boys you always dream of going on to play for your local club and I've got the chance to do that from next year.

"There's a good base of players at Rovers and I'm looking forward to playing with them and adding to the strength of the squad.

"I've had some good times at Huddersfield playing in finals and play-offs and it will be a sad day when I say goodbye at the end of the season.

"It'll be good to have the Rovers fans on my side and hopefully I can do what I've done throughout my career and score tries for them."

Robins Chief Executive, Mike Smith, was delighted to capture the signature of one of Super League's most potent wingers.

"David is one of the competitions top wingers and his strike rate speaks for itself," said Smith.

"We're bringing to the club someone who is proven at this level, is hungry for a new challenge and is excited at the prospect of playing in front of some of the most passionate supporters in the country.

"He has scored tries wherever he has been and I'm sure Rovers fans can't wait to see him do it in the famous red and white in 2012 and beyond."

Huddersfield Giants Managing Director, Richard Thewlis, paid tribute to the contribution of Hodgson during his time in West Yorkshire.

"Hull KR approached us in the right manner (which is not always the case in our game) and asked for permission to speak with David which we granted," Thewlis commented.

"I would say that David has been one of our best ever signings in the Super League era which his record amply demonstrates, and he has a wonderful opportunity at Rovers which, with the emergence of younger talent at our club and the constraints of the salary cap, we would not be able to offer him.

"He is an outstanding professional and role model and will leave us at the end of the year with our very best wishes and thanks for his service.

"I congratulate too, Rovers on signing David. We look forward to welcoming them and David back to the Galpharm next year as well as in a fortnights time when we host them on our new pitch in Super League for our 'Return of the Giants' homecoming fixture.

"The salary cap rules and regulations are designed to some extent for younger players to make their mark and then earn the better contracts which ultimately means that other players have to move on, which in reality is what has happened in this situation."

The Robins have also handed a first professional contract to 17-year old Aaron Ollett.

A former Skirlaugh Bulls amateur, the back-rower has signed a one-year deal that will see him part of the first team squad from the beginning of 2012.

Preview: Huddersfield v Wakefield

Huddersfield Giants Head Coach Nathan Brown is confident that his side can adapt to the absence of Danny Brough ahead of Sundays trip to face Wakefield Wildcats, with 21 year old half-back Kyle Wood set to take his place.

Wood has impressed on a dual registration deal with Co-Operative Championship high flyers Sheffield Eagles this season and Brown has no qualms about him replacing the unfortunate Brough;

"It was obviously disappointing news for us about Danny's injury because he has been in consistently good form for the whole season. He had earned the right to play for England due to how he had played for the Giants so obviously we feel for Danny a little bit. It opens the door for someone else to get an opportunity and Kyle Wood will come in this week, he is a young player who has been waiting patiently for a year or so to get a shot and as one door closes for somebody another one opens.

"A few things didn't go our way against Castleford and we had some players in key positions who were watching the game, to lose your full-back and your half-back as well as those players already missing was tough. It's a credit to the players the way they responded and to get two points was pleasing."

Brown also revealed that skipper Kevin Brown and hooker Shaun Lunt are set to return to contention for the match at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium and other first team squad members may get their chance;

"Kev (Brown) and Shaun (Lunt) should both be right for selection this week, ideally we may have given them another week off but not everything is ideal.

"We feel comfortable with the people who are going to come into our squad and play this week will do a good job. They are all blokes that have played this year and we can feel confident about them doing well in their respective positions. As long as people in the squad continue to work hard and we play well we'll be hard to beat, if we don't play well then obviously we run the risk of being beaten."

Interview with David Hodgson ahead of 300th career appearance

In-form Giants winger David Hodgson will make his 300th senior appearance in Rugby League if selected to take the field against Wakefield Wildcats in Sundays Engage Super League Round 17 clash at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium (3.30pm).

The former Great Britain International flyer has an impressive strike rate of 137 tries in his 299 career appearances to date and admitted he is pleased to have reached the milestone;

"I could never have imagined at the start of my career that I would have got to 300 games so it's great for me and something I'm really proud of. The way the game is these days it's very tough and physical so to get to 300 games is pleasing. It's sort of crept up on me a little bit but it's a good milestone to achieve."

Hodgson has been in fine form as of late, scoring six tries in his last four appearances, including a hat-trick in the Round 15 victory over Hull FC. The 29 year old is happy with how things are going and admitted that he passes on advice where possible to the clubs emerging talent;

"I feel like I've been playing alright of late and I've managed to get over the try line a few times which is pleasing. I'm doing my best to help the team in any way I can and if I can be there to finish things off and get a few tries then that is great. The main thing is helping the team to try and be consistent week in week out and keep up at the top of the Super League.

"I try to help out where possible with some of the younger outside backs and give advice if they need it, there are plenty of other players who are well qualified to give advice too so it's more of a collective thing. If one of the younger guys wants some tips then they know there is a core of senior players around."

Looking ahead to the clash against John Kear's Wildcats, Hodgson believes that despite the absence of key players such as Danny Brough and Luke O'Donnell, the Giants have enough in their ranks to prevail and get the two points;

"It's certainly a very strong squad this year, especially in terms of depth. It's up there with any other squad in Super League and some of the younger guys have shown how good they are when they have been called upon. I think Nathan (Brown) knows that if he has to bring someone in due to injuries or loss of form then we can all be confident in that players ability and the fact that when they go out there they will try their hardest week in week out. That is the kind of mentality that Nathan has brought to the club and the lads have bought into it.

"We know we are missing a few individuals but its more about us as players making sure we turn up on the day, try hard and play to the best of our ability. Wakefield will have something to say about that I'm sure, they have got a young team and they will be full of enthusiasm."

Milestones

* Kevin Brown has scored 297 career points
* David Hodgson has made 299 career appearances
* Michael Lawrence has scored 96 points for the Giants
