Warriors farewells and Old Boys reunion
Fri September 2, 2011
Source: www.warriors.co.nz

Farewells to departing coach Ivan Cleary, club legend Lance Hohaia and other players will be a feature attraction when the Vodafone Warriors close their regular season with their NRL-NYC double against North Queensland at Mount Smart Stadium on Saturday night.

The match will be Cleary's 150th game as the club's NRL coach, well ahead of Daniel Anderson who ranks second among the Vodafone Warriors' six coaches with 92 games in charge.

A week later Cleary will take the team into the NRL finals for the fourth time in his six years as coach; it will be the club's seventh time in the play-offs in the last 11 years.

As is usual with the final regular season home game, it will be an emotional time afterwards when Vodafone Warriors members and all fans will be able to farewell Cleary (Vodafone Warrior No 73) plus 10-year veteran Hohaia (99), Shaun Berrigan (165), Aaron Heremaia (153), Jeremy Latimore (158), Joel Moon (145), Upu Poching (161) and Brett Seymour (157) as well as Matt Robinson, a member of last year's NYC premiership-winning Vodafone Junior Warriors who was in the NRL squad this season.

Hohaia will make his 181st NRL appearance on Saturday night, third on the club's all-time list behind his former team-mates Stacey Jones (261) and Logan Swann (195). On Wednesday, the Huntly-raised utility was feted at a testimonial lunch at the Ellerslie Convention Centre as only the third player in history to play 10 seasons or more for the Vodafone Warriors (Jones and Awen Guttenbeil being the others).

After the feature match, Cleary and the departing players will all be presented with framed jerseys while there will be big screen video tributes to Hohaia and Cleary.

There to support the Vodafone Warriors' NRL and NYC teams for the last scheduled home game of the season will be a group of former players who will gather for what has now become the traditional old boys' day. After 17 seasons, the Vodafone Warriors have had 170 players who have appeared for the club at first-grade level, the most recent being Pita Godinet.

The old boys will have a pre-game meeting with the NRL team and will form a guard of honour when the players run onto the field. They'll also be involved in the post-match farewell ceremony.

Among the former players confirmed to attend on Saturday night are six who appeared in the club's debut match against Brisbane on March 10, 1995. Those expected for the reunion (player numbers in brackets) are:

Dean Bell (1), Whetu Taewa (5), Gavin Hill (8), Tony Tatupu (12), Tony Tuimavave (13), Tea Ropati (15), Joe Vagana (18), Syd Eru (19), Stacey Jones (24), Mark Horo (30), Awen Guttenbeil (33), Iva Ropati (35), Logan Swann (42), Aaron Whittaker (48), Jerry Seuseu (50), Monty Betham (61), Cliff Beverley (62), Boycie Nelson (70), Mark Tookey (76), Shontayne Hape (80), Henry Perenara (85), Jason Temu (89), Anthony Seuseu (94), Shannon Stowers (116), Steve Price (121), Ruben Wiki (123).

Hohaia and Taylor back for Penrith trip
Tue August 16, 2011

Utility Lance Hohaia and back rower Elijah Taylor both return to the Vodafone Warriors' line-up for their 24th-round NRL match against the Panthers at Centrebet Stadium in Penrith on Saturday night.

Hohaia (28) comes onto the interchange bench for his 179th NRL appearance, his first since being sidelined with a knee injury after the Vodafone Warriors' 36-12 win against Canterbury-Bankstown on July 15.

He played his first game in a month when he turned out for the Auckland Vulcans in their 28-20 win over Wentworthville in the New South Wales Cup last Saturday, scoring a try and laying on two of fullback Glen Fisiiahi's three tries. Hohaia replaces Pita Godinet, who has been on the bench for the last four weeks since becoming Vodafone Warrior No 170 in the 48-16 win against South Sydney on July 24.

Taylor (21) is also back on the interchange. He was rested last week after appearing in 17 consecutive matches since his NRL debut against Cronulla in the fourth round in April. So far this season Taylor has averaged almost 59 minutes and 34 tackles a game (of his team-mates only Michael Luck has averaged more tackles a game this season).

Taylor replaces Ukuma Ta'ai, who made his NRL return against Newcastle last week but faces suspension after being charged with a grade two striking offence. Ta'ai has taken an early guilty plea on the charge but the club is disputing the grading; it will be considered at an NRL judicial hearing tomorrow night.

With five wins in their six games since their second bye, the Vodafone Warriors go into the Penrith game still in sixth spot on points for and against. They're level on 28 points with Wests Tigers, only one behind last year's premiers the St George Illawarra Dragons (fifth) and two behind North Queensland (fourth). The Vodafone Warriors face the Dragons and the Cowboys in their last two regular season games.

"The Panthers are down the table (11th) but they're always dangerous and have the ability to make us pay if we don't pay attention to our own game," said Vodafone Warriors head coach Ivan Cleary.

"We were guilty of a poor first half performance against the Knights last week but fortunately we got out of the game with a much better effort in the second spell. We can't let that happen again."

While welcoming back Hohaia, Cleary said Godinet had made a great contribution over the last month.

"Pita did really well for us, coming into the NRL out of the New South Wales Cup," he said.

The Vodafone Warriors will field the same backline they've used in each of their last four wins with Joel Moon again in the centres making his 48th appearance for the club.

Three players will extend their record of playing in every game this season, captain Simon Mannering, Feleti Mateo and Ben Matulino making their 22nd appearances this weekend. Mannering was this week again named the players' player of the day following his performance in the 20-12 victory against the Knights. It was the fifth time this season that he has collected the accolade and the second game on end.
