Country dealt triple blow
Mon April 28, 2008
by Matthew O'Neill
Country Origin have been dealt a triple blow, with outside backs Brett Stewart, Jamie Lyon and Matt Cooper all ruled out of Friday night's clash against City Origin in Wollongon.

Fullback Stewart (calf), and the centre pairing of Lyon (personal reasons) and Cooper (back) were all scratched at the medical this morning.

Cronulla's Brett Kearney moves from the bench to fullback with Stewart out and Bulldogs custodian Luke Patten currently injured. Amos Roberts comes onto the wing with Joel Monaghan shifting into the centres where he'll be partnered alongside North Queensland's Ben Harris.

St George Illawarra utility Ben Hornby has been added to the bench with Kearney promoted into the starting side.

Revised Country Team:

1. Brett Kearney (Cronulla Sutherland Sharks)
2. Amos Roberts (Sydney Roosters)
3. Joel Monaghan (Canberra Raiders)
4. Ben Harris (North Queensland Cowboys)
5. Anthony Quinn (Melbourne Storm)
6. Todd Carney (Canberra Raiders)
7. Brett Finch (Parramatta Eels)
8. Brett White (Melbourne Storm)
9. Danny Buderus, captain (Newcastle Knights)
10. Anthony Laffranchi (Gold Coast Titans)
11. Nathan Hindmarsh (Parramatta Eels)
12. Andrew Ryan (The Bulldogs)
13. Craig Fitzgibbon (Sydney Roosters)

Subs:
14. Ben Cross (Newcastle Knights)
15. Chris Heighington (Wests Tigers)
16. Ben Hornby (St George Illawarra Dragons)
17. Glenn Stewart (Manly Warringah Sea Eagles)

Coach: Laurie Daley

Co-captains Ryles and Hornby remain at Dragons

Dragons Captains Ben Hornby and Jason Ryles have today agreed to terms with St George Illawarra for a further three seasons, until the end of 2010.

The local juniors were keen to continue their career with the Dragons, Hornby, 27, a product of the Corrimal Cougars and Ryles, 28, from Berkely Wests and are pleased to have their contract negotiations completed

Hornby said, "I have always wanted to be a one Club player and am excited to finally know that I will be staying here at the Dragons for the at least the next three years. This is a great Club that has always been great to me and it is a relief to know where I am up to for the next three years.

Ryles said, "I'm very pleased to have my contract sorted and excited to be staying with the Dragons. Contract negotiations are always complex and it has taken a bit longer than I would have liked but I am very pleased with the outcome."

The Co-Captains agree that while other offers may have been financially tempting, there is much more than money involved when making such decisions.

Hornby added, "Our Club has great direction and a great culture. It is something of which I very much want to remain a part.

Ryles continued on and said, "I have some great friends here and we have a very talented and enthusiastic group of young players who just keep getting better each week. Although we might seem to be doing it a bit tough at the moment, I'm very confident in what the future will be like here at the Dragons."

Dragons Chief Executive Officer Peter Doust said he too was pleased to finalise the contracts of these current leaders.

Doust said, "Ben and Jason are both outstanding players who contribute significantly to our Club and on and off the field. Contract negotiations are always complex and I am very pleased that we have reached an agreement with both players who will continue to play such an important role in our Club moving forward."

Dragons Coach Nathan Brown was equally as excited to resign two of his Co-Captains to three years terms.

Brown said, "Benny and Rylses are terrific players and great Clubmen. Both are great role models who will continue to lead our Club, in particular our young up and coming players."
