Castleford Tigers are reeling from the news that in-form prop forward Craig Huby will be out of action for at least four months with a fractured patella.
The Tigers' longest-serving player sustained the injury during their last-gasp 22-20 Engage Super League defeat at St Helens on Monday and remains in hospital.
Castleford coach Terry Matterson said: "He was operated on last night and it went well.
"He's going to be months. I don't know exactly but I'd say four minimum. Fingers crossed there are no complications and we can get him back for the semi-finals."
Huby, 24, has been playing the best rugby of his career to help Castleford make their best-ever start to a Super League campaign and Matterson believes he would have been in with a realistic chance of playing for England in the June 10 clash with the Exiles.
"It's a cruel blow for him," Matterson said. "He was a real chance of making the England squad.
"He and James Graham have been the best two front-rowers this year, I don't think there would be any argument about that.
"He's been getting better and better. He's worked hard over the years to get to this stage but he's become mentally strong and he'll be fine.
"We're going to miss him but we've got to deal with these things."
Huby's injury setback came just two days after his wife Vicky gave birth to their second child.
He is the club's third front row forward to be sidelined, joining youngster Jonny Walker and veteran Nick Fozzard on the injury list.
Meanwhile, Matterson will include utility back Ryan McGoldrick in his 19-man squad for the derby against Leeds Rhinos at the PROBIZ Coliseum on Friday.
McGoldrick has not played this season because of injury and was left out of the squad last week for disciplinary reasons.

USUALLY,
Discord starts by saying how this or that should be fixed - and then we try to come up some ham-fisted way of doing it.
But honestly, what from last weekend needs fixing? It was a great four days to be involved in rugby league and I'm sure all our readers agree, whether you watched one game illegally on the internet from Bhutan or went along to four of 'em.
I went to four. South Sydney looked a little off the pace on Friday but what a spectacle! Andrew Johns put it best: that comeback was "mirarkable".
It's hard to describe how happy the author felt walking into Eden Park as part of a 40,000 crowd for the Warriors-Parramatta game. OK, they got a bit bored and threw rubbish in the air again - but Shihad were magnificent as pre-match entertainment.
"The music was great during the warm-up," Nathan Hindmarsh said afterwards. I even got knocked over by a mosher when I went to take a closer look at Jon Toogood and the boys!
Penrith were terrible. It was a season's worth of #@%&-ups in one game but the focus on that probably does Newcastle a disservice (then again, the Knights media-relations meant it was hard to focus on them because they left so quickly and offered so little co-operation to the fourth estate).
And watching Monday Night Football from the sidelines was enthralling. Have we seen individual tries of the calibre of Benji Marshall and Josh Morris' in a single game like that? Probably - but I can't remember when.
So, readers (especially you, ferrett!), it's not always bad news that sells. There's plenty of the good stuff around at the moment.
----------
LAST week I neglected to address Danny Brough's selection for England. It's a joke.
If Richard Lewis is truly committed to the idea of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales then he should be stopping farces like this from occurring. Brough played for Scotland last year in a tournament which saw them try to qualify for the Four Nations - in which he will now play for England! OK, players have switched before and I have argued for their right to do so. But did Brough even have to apply to the RLIF to have his eligibility changed, as Taniela Tuiaki and FiuFui MoiMoi had to?
Scotland look like having meaningful internationals this year against Samoa and in the European Cup. It's further evidence that Great Britain should play at least once every four years, rewarding those who are brave enough to commit to Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
While on England, Castleford's Craig Huby was unlucky to miss out on the preliminary squad in my opinion.
----------
I'M hearing the All Stars side to face up to England in mid-season will be called the "Exiles". I'm not sure if that is a moniker that's going to get the players' hearts racing.
Luke O'Donnell made the point that if the team was to get involved in the community, doing charity work together, the players would feel more of a sense of community and purpose.
There was a proposal on the table for that to happen - under the banner "Southern Suns" - but I understand it has been rejected by the RFL.
Meanwhile, don't be surprised to see Ian Millward end up at Salford in some capacity before the season is out.
----------
FEEDBACK time and Rabby, I think it's a little unrealistic to expect 500 men aged 17 to 34 to abstain from drinking for eight months every year! Why shouldn't these guys enjoy the freedoms the rest of us have? And why should it be so hard for them to enjoy those freedoms and stay out of trouble?
And the NRL does leave it to clubs to take action against wayward players - it's only when the clubs fail to take sufficient action (as was the case in the Stewart instance) that the League gets involved.
Warriorman, it seems the alleged Marshall "victim" is Sri Lankan and is denying he made any racial comments at all.
Ferrett, it's Ivan Cleary's job to win football games and it's my job to find out things people don't want me to know. And so far this season, we both failed! And let's see how you'd fair without 'my industry' keeping your governments, big business, criminals and profiteers honest. 'My industry' is the difference between our society and fascism, Ferrett.
Jodolittle, it would seem the "hard prima facie facts" surrounding the Stewart case are now under dispute. Manly are saying Stewart was not drunk and that he was only refused service along with his team-mates because the bar was closing so it could be re-opened to the public.
By the way guys, I now have my own website, stevemascord.com. Come and check it out and make a comment if you want. Cheers.
