Tigers tame unhappy Hull FC

Willie Isa scored two tries as Castleford's stunning start to the season continued with a 20-18 win at Hull to put home coach Richard Agar back under the spotlight.

A home defeat by Wakefield a fortnight ago prompted Hull's fans to call for Agar's head in and out of the stadium, and there were similar jeers as Castleford recorded a sixth win from seven attempts so far.

Isa's second try on the hour-mark proved to be the clincher for the Tigers, who gained a share of the lead at the top of the table, leaving Hull, who were unable to control stand-off Rangi Chase all night, with just two wins to their name.

Out-of-favour Wigan centre Martin Gleeson, at the game with close friend Sean Long, watched on from the stands and saw the veteran scrum-half sent off with four minutes remaining for a seemingly late tackle moments after he had returned from the sin bin.

It was widely considered that Hull saved Agar's job with a come-from-behind win at Harlequins last weekend, and they carried that momentum into the early stages here as Sam Moa made a break that Craig Fitzgibbon was unable to finish.

Prop Lee Radford was sin-binned for a dangerous tackle after six minutes, though, and that allowed Castleford to get into the game and take a six-point lead.

Richie Mathers was close with a short run at the line, before former Hull winger Kirk Dixon kicked a penalty in the 12th minute.

Hull wing Will Sharp then made an inexplicable handling error from a Chase kick that led to Castleford taking the lead with a try that celebrated the first-team return of young back Richard Owen.

Out for almost 14 months after a double leg break at Bradford last year, Owen was making his first appearance since then and scored the first try as he got the better of Richard Whiting following Chase's smart second-tackle kick.

Hull were able to respond, though, with Kirk Yeaman bringing them within two points with his sixth try of the season after a three-on-one overlap created by Cameron Phelps.

A period of home pressure followed, but, after they were unable to make it count, Isa scored Castleford's second try five minutes before the half-time hooter after Danny Orr bamboozled the Hull defence with a wonderful delayed pass.

Joe Westerman split the posts with a penalty for Hull with the last kick of the half, and they would have been ahead 10 minutes after the break had Whiting had the pace to go 60 metres after swooping on a loose ball.

However, it did not matter seconds later as they pulled level at 10-10 thanks to a close-range bundle from Danny Tickle, with the same player kicking the goal to give his side the lead for the first time on the night.

Some Hull indiscipline allowed Dixon to kick another penalty and level the scores once more, before Isa went over for his second to regain the lead for Terry Matterson's men.

Chase, whose movement foxed Hull's defence all night, ran at their right-edge defence before laying in former Melbourne centre Isa who smashed his way over the line.

Dixon added the conversion and referee James Child, who awarded 26 penalties on the night, then sent Long and Martin Aspinwall to the sin bin for starting a brawl that involved the majority of the 26 players on the field.

Dixon kicked a third penalty from 42 metres to give Castleford some breathing space, which they quickly needed as Fitzgibbon went in off a short ball and Tickle added the goal.

But Hull's chances evaporated when Long was sent off after his involvement in another ugly-looking incident.

Storm's Willie Isa to plead not guilty to charge

Melbourne Storm centre Willie Isa will plead not guilty to a grade one dangerous contact charge at the NRL judiciary tomorrow night.

Isa and Storm General Manager Football Operations, Frank Ponissi, will fly to Sydney tomorrow afternoon to contest the charge.

"We have studied footage of the incident and we will present the best possible case to the panel members tomorrow night,'' Ponissi said.

"We will wait for the outcome of the hearing before we comment further on the actual incident."
