Source: www.warriors.co.nzAustralian rugby league legend Andrew Johns will again be in Vodafone Warriors colours today when he works with the club's NRL players in another skills session at Mount Smart Stadium.
Johns has been in Auckland since the start of the week after being signed as a skills coach by the Vodafone Warriors for the 2012 NRL season.
Last night Johns was given a rapturous reception as the special guest at a Christmas function held exclusively for Vodafone Warriors members at the Nation's Clubrooms at SKYCITY. Also joining the members were Vodafone Warriors head coach Brian McClennan, NYC title-winning Vodafone Junior Warriors coach John Ackland, new signing Nathan Friend and team-mates Micheal Luck, Manu Vatuvei, Kevin Locke, Shaun Johnson, Jerome Ropati, Ben Henry, Sam Rapira, Feleti Mateo, Krisnan Inu and Jacob Lillyman.
Johns told the member he had been working with the players - mainly the halves, hookers and fullbacks - on their full range of skills.
"I've been blown away by what I've seen among the young players this week. The potential is immense but I stress it's potential," he said.
"I'm a big fan of the under-20s competition and like to get to the ground early to watch the games. I love watching the Warriors because they play a style of football that's good to watch. It's a credit to John (Ackland), the way he prepares the team.
"Some of the young guys at the club are, athletically, without peer. They're just so big and really there's no position for a lot of them. It's just a case of give them the ball and let them play."
His first week with the club has given him a chance to work closely with Shaun Johnson, a player who excited him the first time he appeared in the NYC in 2009. Since then the 21-year-old has gone on to make his NRL debut this year, making 16 first-grade appearances and being named the club's Vodafone Young NRL Player of the Year.
"There are some people who play sport who have been given a gift and he's one of the lucky ones," said Johns.
"But I come back to that word potential. I've been really impressed with the way he has been working and hopefully Shaun realises he's very lucky and makes the most of the talent he has been given."
Johns will return in the New Year for another week with the Vodafone Warriors and will also be used in his role during the season. He has similar contracts with a number of NRL clubs including Canterbury-Bankstown, Gold Coast and Melbourne as well as the Rebels in rugby union.

WITH Darren Lockyer's retirement looming, I have more and more colleagues ringing me for the phone number of
Rugby League Week's editor, Martin Lenehan.
The reason is simple. They want to write a story about whether or not - and if so, when - Lockyer will be made an Immortal.
It's a testimony the brilliance of the original idea, which in 1981 inducted Bob Fulton, Arthur Summons, John Raper and Clive Churchill as the Australian game's post-war greats, that there is still such enduring interest in the concept.
Should Lockyer be inducted ahead of Andrew Johns? How much impact should off-field misadventures have on the judging?
But there is an ugly side to what should be healthy, fun debate.
The Australian Rugby League has repeatedly called on RLW to "hand over" the Immortals judging to "the game". There are two problems with this.
One, I don't think the ARL, NRL or even the Independent Commission can be called "The Game". The Game is actually a pastime, following a rule book, pursued by anyone, at any time, anywhere.
Secondly, why should
Rugby League Week hand over its most enduring trademark for nothing. Should the
Daily Telegraph "hand over" the Dally Ms?
For that matter, should Coke give up its red can or Goodyear blow up its blimp?
The Immortals may have taken on a life of its own (pun intended) but that doesn't mean it has stopped being what it was to start with: a magazine promotion. When the International Rugby League Federation didn't agree with the judging of the Golden Boot, it started its own award (which is still often confused with the Golden Boot). Fair enough. Do your best.
The ARL now has a Team Of The Century and a Hall Of Fame. Again, fair enough.
If you don't agree with how the Immortals (the most recent inductees were Wally Lewis, Arthur Beetson and Graeme Langlands) are run, then don't write stories about them. Don't talk about in the pub.
Talk about the Hall Of Fame. It's your choice.
But why should
Rugby League Week give up what has probably been its greatest, lasting contribution to the game?
And by that, I do mean 'The Game'.

I WAS shocked to hear this morning that Alan Tongue had decided to retire.
Only a couple of weeks ago I did a lengthy interview with him and found him to be full of energy for what was ahead despite Canberra's tough year.
Alan's always been great to fans and to the media and he will be missed. That's one less NRL player not afraid to speak his mind.

WELL, the uproar about prescription medicines came even earlier than I expected. Dragon68, if you mentioned that prescription drugs were a problem in the NRL and I brushed you, then I apologise. But it still seems to me you are making a lot of unsubstantiated claims and we have to be very careful when using people's names. Your comment, I would imagine, only just passed legal muster before being posted.
Joey I don't know what Gallop has to do with it. Todd Carney broke a club rule, not any laws, this time so it is up to the club to deal with it. I believe he will be cut adrift at the end of the season. The process will drag on until then.
Dogga, Arana Taumata will get another chance - but not in the NRL. That's if he is not a guest of the state in response to these latest charges.
