Kiwis popular at official opening of Eden Park
Mon October 11, 2010
by Matthew O'Neill
Kiwi coach Stephen Kearney, captain Benji Marshall and seven other players played their part in supporting the official opening of the refurbished Eden Park yesterday.

With a Four Nations doubleheader being played at Eden Park on November 6, the Kiwis joined in the festivities.

Marshall, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Sam Perrett, Frank-Paul Nuuausala and Greg Eastwood were kept busy at a signing session while Lance Hohaia, Shaun Kenny-Dowall and Ben Matulino helped to sell tickets for Four Nations games including the November 6 double bill featuring the Kiwis against the Kangaroos and England taking on Papua New Guinea.

At the same time Kearney, record-holding former Kiwi captain Ruben Wiki and football staff were involved in a game of touch.

When it was time to leave, Marshall was mobbed several times as he made his way through throngs of fans before returning to the Kiwis' base at the Millennium Institute on the North Shore.

In the afternoon the Kiwis had a gruelling training session in front of a good crowd at Freyberg Park in Browns Bay, followed by another signing session.

Back at their base, they were joined by NRL premiership-winning St George Illawarra players Jeremy Smith, Nathan Fien and Jason Nightingale plus Canberra's Bronson Harrison, who came into camp only today.

The Kiwis will train again at North Harbour Stadium tomorrow morning as they build up for their one-off Test against Toa Samoa at Mount Smart Stadium next Saturday night. The New Zealand Maori face England in the curtain-raiser.

The Maori, including dual Australian rugby league-rugby union international Timana Tahu, assembled in Hamilton today. They'll be joined by the Kiwis when they visit the Maori King at Turangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia today (Monday).

The Samoans arrived in Auckland last night. They'll field a side including seven former Kiwis next Saturday - among them Tony Puletua, Ali Lauitiiti and Francis Meli - while the Maori side to meet England features Tahu and Clinton Toopi in the centres.

After the Test against the Samoans, the Kiwis head into the Four Nations against England at Westpac Stadium in Wellington (October 23), Papua New Guinea at the International Stadium in Rotorua (October 30) and Australia at

Eden Park. The Four Nations final is scheduled for Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on November 13.

Tickets for the Four Nations games in New Zealand and Australia are on sale now (go to www.nzrl.co.nz for more information). Tickets for the Test against Samoa are also on sale.

New coaching panel on the Storm's horizon

Melbourne Storm will shortly be in a position to reveal a revamped coaching staff following Stephen Kearney's resignation today, CEO Ron Gauci has announced.

As expected, Kearney today informed club officials he would be taking up the vacant Parramatta Eels coaching role in 2011, with a replacement at the Storm to be publicly announced in the coming weeks.

Gauci said the Storm always expected Kearney, who has served a five-year apprenticeship under Craig Bellamy, to assume a head coaching role at some point in his career.

Gauci, appointed to the Storm CEO role in July this year, said a contingency plan to replace Kearney as Bellamy's No.1 assistant was well advanced.

"Stephen has been a great servant of the Melbourne Storm both as a player and a coach," said Gauci.

"The entire club is greatly appreciative of the role Stephen has played here and the life membership he received just last month was evident of the respect he holds here.

"We were always aware that, at some point in his career, Stephen would want to take the step up to a head coaching role and we had been planning accordingly.

"We are confident that we will be in a position shortly to publicly announce a replacement for Stephen.

"We wish Stephen and his young family the very best for the future."

Brad Arthur, the Storm's backs coach, will also be moving on, having accepted a position at the Eels as an assistant coach to Kearney.

In 2010, Arthur worked under Bellamy and alongside Kearney, development coach Tony Adam, front-row coach Robbie Kearns and Under-20s coach Dean Pay on the Storm's coaching panel.

Storm begins its staggered pre-season preparations on October 25 with a second group to begin on November 1.

The club's internationals that will be competing in this year's Four-Nations tournament in Australia and New Zealand will resume pre-season training in the New Year.
