Eels sign Keating to new two year deal
Fri May 2, 2008

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels have secured the services of gifted playmaker and local junior Kris Keating for the 2009 & 2010 seasons.

The re-signing comes hot on the heels of his NRL debut, the Cabramatta product coming off the bench in the Eels 20-16 loss to Manly in round six.

The multi-talented 19-year-old has also been one of the Eels best in their undefeated start to the Toyota Cup season, confirming a reputation earned by captaining the club at every junior level.

Keating said choosing to take the new deal wasn't a hard decision to make.

"I made it pretty clear I wanted to stay so once the offer was on the table I said yes pretty much straight away," Keating said.

"I've been at the club since starting with the Harold Matthews Cup in 2003, so it's a comfortable place for me to be.

"I've had a taste of first grade now and I obviously want plenty more in the future so I'm more than happy to be sticking around."

Parramatta Eels Chief Executive Denis Fitzgerald said the retention of Keating is a massive boost for the club.

"We are very pleased to re-sign one of our most outstanding juniors, who has played Matthews Cup, SG Ball Cup and Jersey Flegg for Parramatta over the past few years," Mr. Fitzgerald said.

"In round six Kris became our first Toyota Cup player to play NRL and he performed very well in his debut."

Keating to make first grade debut for Eels against Manly

19-year-old Kris Keating will make his first grade debut when the Pirtek Parramatta Eels take on the Manly Sea Eagles in their Heritage Round clash at Parramatta Stadium on Friday night.

Keating, a stand out at five eighth for the Eels undefeated Toyota Cup team through five games this season, takes his place on the reserves bench after coming in for the injured Mark Riddell.

Eels head coach Michael Hagan says the versatile youngster is ready to make the step up.

"I said at the season launch it wouldn't be long before we saw Kris in first grade and he's proven me right," Hagan said.

"He's a versatile player whose skills mean he can play hooker or in the halves equally well.

"We rely on the back up that Mark Riddell's kicking game provides so we lose nothing in that department.

"He's a fairly mature character too so I've no doubt he'll handle the step up well."

Riddell's absence means the older of the Keating brothers, 21-year-old Matthew, makes just his second starting appearance for the Eels after debuting against the Bulldogs in round one of 2008.

In other changes, Daniel Wagon makes his return after missing round five with a hip flexor strain, while Feleti Mateo shifts from lock to five eighth and Brett Finch from five eighth to halfback following the withdrawal of Tim Smith.

The Eels play the Sea Eagles at 7.45pm on Friday at Parramatta Stadium.

Keating's ascent to the first grade ranks means a shuffle at Toyota Cup level, with Daniel Mortimer set to reunite with his 2007 SG Ball winning halves partner Cameron Speechley in the Under 20's on Friday.

Speechley's return is one of three changes made by head coach Matt Cameron, with Justin Hunt to start at fullback in place of Domenic Nasso and Owen Lauofo coming onto the wing for Taputoa Rea.

The Toyota Cup clash between the Eels and Sea Eagles kicks off at 5.30pm.
