Kenny-Dowall to become 13th Kiwi Test debutant in 2007
Thu November 15, 2007
by NZRL
Sydney Roosters winger Shaun Kenny-Dowall will become the Kiwis' 13th test debutant this year when he lines up in the one-off international against France at Stade Jean Bouin on Saturday.

He replaces an injured Taniela Tuiaki on the left wing in the final test of the New Zealand side's four-match tour of Britain and France.

It's the only change in the starting line-up used in last Saturday's 22-28 third test loss to Great Britain, leaving the Kiwis with one of their youngest wing pairings in history - Kenny-Dowall is 19 while right winger Chase Stanley, who scored twice on debut last weekend, is only 18.

Kenny-Dowall and Stanley both excelled for the Junior Kiwis in their 24-22 victory against the Junior Kangaroos last month. Stanley was an original selection in the Kiwis' touring team while Kenny-Dowall was brought in as a replacement after Cronulla's Luke Covell was injured in the Centenary Test in Wellington on October 14.

The teenagers both played for the All Golds in the Centenary International against the Northern Union to continue their rapid rise in 2007. Both made their NRL debuts during the season, Kenny-Dowall finishing with eight tries from 14 appearances for the Roosters.

"They're exciting prospects for the Kiwis," said Kiwi coach Gary Kemble.

"Chase had a fantastic debut last Saturday and now Shaun is joining him on the other wing. Shaun has worked really hard throughout the tour and deserves this chance.

"It's tough for Taniela that he doesn't have the chance to add another test to his name because he has done a good job for us from the outset. In the end, though, his knee wasn't going to be quite right so it has opened the way for Shaun."

Kenny-Dowall will become Kiwi No.746 in the final test of a year that has seen New Zealand use 13 new players in six tests against Australia, Great Britain and France.

Krisnan Inu (Parramatta), Sam Rapira (Warriors) and Greg Eastwood (Brisbane) all began their test careers against Australia in April while six new players were called in against the Kangaroos last month - Covell, Tuiaki, Jeremy Smith (South Sydney), Fuifui Moimoi (Parramatta), Jeremy Smith (Melbourne) and Jeff Lima (Melbourne).

Four more players have become test players on this tour of Britain and France - Sam Perrett (Sydney Roosters), Epalahame Lauaki (Warriors) and Stanley and Kenny-Dowall.

Retained in the halves this weekend after their impressive performances in Wigan last week, are Bulldogs standoff Ben Roberts and South Sydney halfback Jeremy Smith.

There are two changes on the interchange bench with Wigan's Thomas Leuluai included after a thigh injury kept him out of the third test against Great Britain and North Queensland's David Faiumu returning as the back-up hooker.

Four players weren't considered because of injury.

Bradford's Shontayne Hape has his right arm in plaster after scans revealed he has broken the scaphoid in his wrist while Lauaki, Bradford's Tame Tupou and Tuiaki are all out with knee complaints. Lauaki has returned home after being forced from the field with medial ligament damage last week. The injury is expected to keep him sidelined for four to six weeks.

This weekend's test will be a rarity. It's the first time the Kiwis have played against France in Paris since 1961.
