Lawrence pens contract extension
Fri August 12, 2011
Source: www.giantsrl.com

Huddersfield Giants 21 year old centre or back rower Michael Lawrence has signed a contract at the club to tie him to the Galpharm Stadium for the next five years. The powerful product of the Newsome Panthers club is a member of the England Knights squad and has already made 86 first team appearances for the claret and gold.

Giants Managing Director Richard Thewlis says that as a home grown talent Lawrence was a key figure in the clubs long term strategy.

"The rules regarding the makeup of squads going forward means that locally produced players who have come through the ranks are critical to any potential success. When you have a player who is an England Knight and is very experienced in his age bracket then to keep him for the long term is an easy decision to make. Michael will get better and better at our club and for him to have long term security in what recent events show is an uncertain marketplace is great for him and his family. He has come through our academies and virtually by passed reserves to become a Super League regular which is great credit to him."

Giants Head Coach Nathan Brown was pleased to secure another player for the Giants long term:

"Michael is a local player whose game just keeps improving. Both at centre and in the back row he does a really good solid job and defensively he is an exceptional player. He is a good lad and a good role model for other young players. His training standards are high and his off field habits are as good as his on field habits. He works hard on his game and his commitment and effort cannot be doubted."

Michael Lawrence was pleased to secure his future at his home town club until the end of the 2016 Season:

"I'm really pleased that I've secured my future at the Giants. It is great to sign a long term deal alongside many of the other boys and it shows that the club want to keep the team together for the long term. This builds continuity and that bond and hopefully this can lead to some silverware.

"I am really proud to be continuing to play for my home town club, I am definitely happy here. I love Huddersfield, I never wanted to go anywhere else so I'm glad we could sort it all out. The fans are great for us with the numbers continuing to grow all the time. Our supporters play a massive part on a gameday and they're definitely our 14th man. With the Season Ticket deal Ken Davy has offered for next year I'd encourage everyone to take advantage of it. You won't find a bargain like that anywhere else in Super League.

2012 Season Tickets are ON SALE NOW from the Galpharm Stadium Ticket Office with superb value prices on offer until Monday 12th September (5pm). Call the Ticket Hotline on 01484 484123 purchase or for further information log onto www.giantsrl.com

Challenge Cup Preview: Huddersfield v Catalans
Fri May 20, 2011
Source: www.giantsrl.com

Nathan Brown is looking for his side to show the same qualities that helped them to a pulsating 40-18 victory over St Helens last Saturday, with Catalan Dragons the visitors to the Galpharm Stadium this Sunday in a do or die Carnegie Challenge Cup 5th Round tie (3pm).

"I thought our effort and commitment was really good and we scored 40 points which was great. To beat St Helens for the first time in the Super League since I have been at the club was pleasing, they are a genuine top four club and there were some good aspects to our performance.

"Both ourselves and Catalan probably know what each other are all about but hopefully we will perform a bit better than we did last month (the 13-12 defeat against the Dragons in Perpignan). We had some good parts to our game that day but our ball control was atrocious, we made about twenty-one errors. We know we need to be better and we know we can be better, we showed that at the weekend. Catalans probably attack a little different from most sides in the competition so it will be a good challenge."

The Giants will be deprived of the services of Luke O'Donnell and Joe Wardle but could welcome back powerhouse front row forward Keith Mason, who has recovered well from a knee injury and is in contention to return.

"It's always disappointing to lose a couple of players, but the guys that came in (against St Helens) did a really good job. It was probably Danny Kirmond's best game for the club since he injured his knee in 2009 and Jamie Cording is a young kid who put in a good twenty minute spell at the weekend and did a good job.

"Keith has trained well this week and if he continues to do so in the remaining sessions then he will be in contention to play. He has recovered a little bit quicker than we first thought ? he looks after himself and his fitness it unbelievable. He is somebody that the players all enjoy playing with and when that is the case it's always a bonus."

Interview with Michael Lawrence

Fresh from a try scoring display in the Giants impressive 40-18 victory over St Helens, giantsrl.com caught up with Michael Lawrence this week ahead of Sundays crunch clash with Catalan Dragons in the Carnegie Challenge Cup 5th Round at the Galpharm Stadium (3pm).

'Bruno' was delighted to play his part in getting the two points and praised Leroy Cudjoe for his special pass that lead to the try which raised the roof at the Galpharm Stadium;

"It was really great to get the win; we knew we wanted to bounce back with a big performance after a disappointing display few weeks. We were pleased to get out there and perform the way we know we can for both ourselves and also for the fans. St Helens are a great side and they will be there or there about at the end of the year, so to get the win over them was really pleasing.

"I wasn't expecting to get the pass in that fashion but I was backing up and hoping the ball would come my way! Leroy came up with a great piece of skill and it was enjoyable finishing off the try. It was good to get some good ball out wide and we are always a side that likes to spread the play quite a bit and show what we can do.

"We have spoken a lot about backing it up this week and it's a big game for us, we know that if we don't turn up on the day then we could be out of the Challenge Cup competition so the emphasis is on us to come up with a big performance. There are no second chances for us but we don't really prepare any differently, there's a little bit more pressure this week with it being a knockout game and we know we have to be on our game to progress."

The popular 21 year old was part of the Giants squad that travelled to Wembley in 2009 however he narrowly missed out on selection and was named as 18th man for the 25-16 defeat against Warrington Wolves in the games showpiece, something he is looking to put right this year.

"Anyone who was part of the 2009 experience knows how much of a great experience it was. Unfortunately I missed out on selection that day, I was gutted at the time but it has made me even more determined to get back there and be a part of it. Everyone knows what a special competition the Challenge Cup is and we will be going out there on Sunday to give our all and hopefully get through to the quarter final."
