Raiders introduce new leadership program
Sat January 21, 2012
Source: www.raiders.com.au

Whilst the Canberra Raiders captaincy is yet to be officially decided on for 2012, the leadership ability of the Club's Player Representatives (CPR) is being enhanced on a weekly basis.

The CPR has been a part of renowned psychologist Sam Patterson's leadership program. The program was one of the recommendations from the High Performance Review and its implementation has been received particularly well by the CPR.

It works on developing the individuals both on and off the field. Patterson has been employing his program with Olympic athletes and several successful businesses. The process is also used in the US with sports such as Major League Baseball and the NFL.

Canberra's CPR comprises of Terry Campese, David Shillington, Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, Bronson Harrison, Brett White and Dane Tilse.

"What we're focusing on is improving on and off field leadership," Patterson explained.

"Some of what that involves is making sure everyone has a streamlined focus from the first minute they walk into the club on a Monday morning. We're not talking about any major behavioural change, it's more a case of tidying up the areas we need to improve on and focusing on those areas that will translate into a performance increase and bring us the biggest reward."

"Our number one focus is to get them to perform at 100% out on the field. We're putting measures in place to ensure they're having as much impact as possible as leaders while reducing the amount of effort and energy that they had to put in to perform that leadership function compared to last year. They probably put too much energy into managing the off field side of the leadership role last year so it's about making their roles easier so they can enjoy the role."

"What I'm doing in conjunction with Dave [Furner] is to help bring belief and a winning culture back into the side and adjusting those certain areas that improve performance and create growth and continuing with that growth over time. We're providing the CPR, coaching staff and players with an accountability to their performance."

"The testing and the follow up coaching from that help the athlete and the coaching staff to break down any behavioural constraints that play out on and off the field so that those guys can then capitalise on their strengths and improve their individual and team performance."

Patterson has been blown away by the CPR's leadership potential.

"What struck me when I first met with the CPR was how little ego there was and how humble they were. On one side that's great because it means there's a lot of humility, but on the other side those players in particular have earned the right to have a real presence around the club and I want to help them to bring that out and really develop that presence."

"The CPR is made up of a core group of players who've been put into that role for a reason so we're helping them to evolve and grow as leaders and helping them to better understand how they can help their team mates by influencing them in a positive nature."

The program is centred on the CPR but is also available to the other players and to the coaching staff.

"From the perspective of the players they've been really open to the program. I've been really impressed by their eagerness to improve themselves as athletes and as people."

"That's what also struck me from the outset; they all really want to grow as leaders and be in that role. The guys who I've met outside the leadership group really want to improve and challenge themselves to step up to another level."

Coach David Furner has also been impressed by the impact the program has had on the playing group.

"It's another area of development for our leadership group not only on the field but off it. From what I'm seeing the players are responding to Sam's program. It's about performing and resolving the factors that are restricting the players to perform at their best."

"It's crucial to our success. A strong leadership group is a massive influence in any sporting team and a lot of culture within a club is driven by them."

"I'm very proud of our leadership group. We all went through a season last year where leadership needed to be strong. This is program is going to be one that they'll learn from and expand their leadership abilities."

Learoyd-Lahrs out for the season

Canberra Raiders forward Sam Mataora will come into the Raiders line-up on the bench this weekend when the Raiders take on the Sharks at Toyota Stadium, with news today that Tom Learoyd-Lahrs will miss the rest of the season with a bicep injury.

Learoyd-Lahrs has been in great touch for the Raiders over the past month, but results of a scan on his injured bicep have indicated that he'll require surgery and will miss the rest of the 2011 season.

Raiders Coach David Furner said losing Learoyd-Lahrs is a big blow for the team, but said it does give a player like Sam Mataora a chance to make an impact.

"Tommy's been great for us so losing him for the rest of the year is a big blow for him and the team," Furner said. "He's been one of our best in the past few games and it's a disappointing loss so we're just hoping he has a good recovery and returns strong next year.

"Sam Mataora gets a chance this weekend to take his place in the side and hopefully he can stand up and perform well," he said. "We've got David Shillington another week or two away as well so it's a chance for guys like Sam to come in and make an impact."

Furner said Josh Dugan was only an outside chance of becoming a late inclusion in the team this weekend, while Josh Miller has been named as 18th man after he returns from his one match ban in the Queensland Cup.

"Josh (Dugan) has only just started rehab running and is yet to train with the full squad so he's still only a slight chance of being available," he said. "With the short turn around it's tough for him to be right by Saturday but we'll assess it later in the week."
