Another Wembley chapter set to written in Leuluai family history
Thu August 25, 2011
Source: www.therhinos.co.uk

The Carnegie Challenge Cup Final is always a fiercely passionate encounter however for one set of supporters at Wembley on Saturday a draw might be the best result.

Leeds Rhinos prop Kylie Leuluai will come up against his younger cousin Thomas, the Wigan scrum half, with family flying in from Down Under to support both including Thomas' father James who scored two tries for Hull in their 1985 loss to Wigan.

Big meetings between the two Leuluais have been common in recent times with Leeds and Wigan clashing in the earlier rounds of the Cup and Play Offs on an annual basis but Saturday's game will have more on the line than ever.

Leeds' Kylie is seven years the senior of Wigan's Thomas but the pair are very close having grown up together in the same house for a large proportion of their childhood. Kylie has announced that next season will be the last of his professional career so time is running out for a Wembley win for the prop.

"I used to live at my grandma's house in Auckland and then Thomas and his family came to live with us. It was the family homestead where our dads had both grown up and it was great that we all lived together.

"Thomas was the cheeky, little one and I used to have to give him the odd slap to keep him in place," joked Kylie. "We used to play rugby in the street in front of the house, so I suppose we have come along way from 8 McLean Avenue to playing against each other in front of a packed Wembley Stadium."

Kylie knew his cousin was destined for big things even from those early days back in New Zealand. "You could tell he was going to make it from when he was 8. He had all the skills even back then playing in the street. His dad used to coach a club called Mount Wellington, where I played and also where Clinton Toopi came from. Even though he was much younger he used to come down and join in the drills, he had heaps of skill and was able to do everything the senior guys could do with the ball."

Having grown up in Auckland, Kylie moved to Australia to begin his professional career when he joined up with Balmain Tigers. Young Thomas followed his cousin's career in the NRL and soon followed him in to the professional ranks. Then in 2005 Thomas decided to try his hand over in the UK and joined up with London Broncos.

"I spoke to Thomas before I decided to join Leeds and he certainly was one of those people who encouraged me to come over here and test myself in Super League. It was important for me to have family over here that I could stay in touch with," added the Rhinos prop.

Leuluai to finish career at Rhinos

Samoan international Kylie Leuluai has confirmed that he will retire from the game at the end of the 2012 Super League season after agreeing a new one year contract with the Rhinos.

The giant prop has been in outstanding form for the Rhinos this season despite the challenges that his team have faced and he has now agreed a twelve month extension to his current contract.

However, the prop says that next season, his 13th as a professional, will be his last. He commented, "I am very pleased to be signing for another year as I never considered playing for any other club. Having been here for five years, Leeds has been a wonderful part of mine and my families lives. I have enjoyed my rugby this season but there are still things I want to achieve here with the Rhinos. At 33, I know there are some people who will question whether I can continue to produce my best but if I did not believe I could still make a massive contribution to the club then I would not have signed. Next year will definitely be my last year as I have other interests I am looking to pursue after rugby however I want to go out on a high with a big eighteen months ahead of us."

Commenting on the announcement Head Coach Brian McDermott said, "Kylie deserves this new deal because of what he has done constantly throughout this season. This is not based on what he has done in the past but on what he is doing right now. He is the ultimate professional who knows how to look after his body and lives the right lifestyle which means his age is not a barrier to him being successful on the field. He is tough and a formidable player within our game."

Leuluai joined the Rhinos in 2007 from Manly Sea Eagles and has made 140 appearances for the club including featuring in all three Grand Finals between 2007 and 2009. He made his first grade debut in Australia back in July 1999 for Balmain and has subsequently played for Wests Tigers, Sydney Roosters and Parramatta.
