Source: www.superleague.co.ukSt Helens gave reluctant head coach Mike Rush the perfect start to his spell in charge as they blitzed Stobart Super League champions Leeds Rhinos and roared to a first win in six matches.
Scrum-half Jonny Lomax led the way with a 22-point haul from two tries and seven goals from eight attempts while wingers Ade Gardner and Gary Wheeler both scored a brace of touchdowns.
The Rhinos players were sporting bright red hair in aid of Sport Relief and were also left with red faces after failing to recover from the shock of conceding three tries in the first 11 minutes.
Leeds trailed 30-0 early in the second half and, although they averted a whitewash, they could not avoid humiliation at the hands of last October's beaten Grand Final opponents.
This evening's result completed a round eight of shocks, with four of the top five clubs experiencing defeat.
Rush, promoted to head coach following the sacking of Royce Simmons, insists his appointment is only temporary but he could now find himself in charge for the rest of the season.
Boosted by the return from injury of James Roby and Lomax, Saints looked energised from the start and left to a standing ovation at half-time after producing a thoroughly dominant performance to run the champions ragged.
Leeds, who gave a debut to 18-year-old stand-off Steve Ward, clearly missed injured duo Danny McGuire and Brent Webb but it was their inability to cope with the Saints pack that will most disturb coach Brian McDermott.
Former international Gardner gave Saints a perfect start when he leapt above England's current winger Ryan Hall to collect Roby's high kick and score the game's first try after only three minutes.
Lomax added a second within three minutes, catching the Leeds' defence napping on the last tackle, and Roby brushed off an attempted tackle from his opposite number Paul McShane to set up the position for Jon Wilkin to send Wheeler over for a third.
With Lomax converting all three tries, Saints led 18-0 inside 11 minutes and Leeds had still not threatened their opponents' line.
It got worse for the champions when the outstanding Tony Puletua burst through the suspect Leeds defence and Lance Hohaia combined with Paul Wellens to get Lomax over for his second try.
Wellens dummied his way over for a fifth Saints try within three minutes of the re-start before a brief Leeds rally brought them a try by centre Zak Hardaker, who finished off a break down the middle from Hall.
Saints were in no mood to relax their grip, however, and Hohaia scored a deserved try before Gardner and Wheeler grabbed their seconds.

Jonny Lomax was in the crowd for all three of St Helens' previous Grand Final meetings with Leeds Rhinos, but he will be in the thick of the action at Old Trafford this evening after experiencing a meteoric rise to fame.
The 21-year-old set himself the goal at the start of the season of surpassing last year's appearance total of 16, but has become an integral member of a Saints team that have been made favourites to collect their first Engage Super League crown since 2006.
Lomax has made 28 appearances out of a possible 33 this year, initially at centre and full-back before settling into the scrum-half role he coveted after watching his hero Sean Long from the terraces.
"It's been pretty surreal," he said. "If I had played 17 matches this season, I would have been happy.
"But we got a couple of injuries leading into the first game and I played centre, ended up at scrum-half and stayed there ever since.
"To wear the shirt that Longy wore for 10 years or more, it's a bit of a dream really. Longy was a massive influence; he's done things you couldn't imagine other people doing.
"I was lucky enough to play with him in a few games. He's a genius. I learned so much from him even playing on the wing."
Lomax, who was a centre in last year's Grand Final defeat by Wigan Warriors, got his breakthrough at scrum-half when Kyle Eastmond, the player initially chosen to replace Long, was dropped in March for making an abusive gesture to Saints fans at the end of a shock home defeat by Harlequins RL.
Lomax made an immediate impact, guiding his team to a 30-16 win over Leeds at Headingley, and his subsequent form culminated in a call-up to England coach Steve McNamara's elite training squad.
Another impressive performance this evening could clinch a place in McNamara's 24-strong Four Nations squad when it is revealed on Monday, but Lomax says he is not looking that far ahead.
"To be honest, I've not put my mind to that," he said. "The goal was 17 games and anything more was a bonus.
"To be called into the squad was massive, but I'm not going to look ahead. If my season ended on Saturday, I couldn't complain."
