Source: www.warriors.co.nzMicheal Luck's run of 70 consecutive NRL appearances has been ended by a shoulder injury.
The 26-year-old loose forward has been left out of the line-up for the round 23 clash against Cronulla at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday night.
The NRL's top tackler was forced off the field in the 60th minute of last Saturday night's 16-12 win over Brisbane and is likely to be sidelined for two matches at this stage.
Since joining the Vodafone Warriors for the 2006 season, the former North Queensland back rower hadn't missed a match until now.
He was the NRL's top tackler last season - 959 in 26 games, an average of 37 tackles a match - and he has been even more prolific this year. Even though he was on the field only 60 minutes, he made 32 tackles to lift his total to 801 in 20 games (40 a game).
"It's a real shame for Lucky and disappointing for us because he makes such a huge contribution to the side consistently every week," said coach Ivan Cleary.
"Considering the workload he has and the job he's required to do, it's a tribute to him that he has been able to put such a long run of appearances together."
With Luck out of the line-up, 19-year-old Ben Matulino is promoted from the bench to make his first start at NRL level after being used as an interchange player in his first eight appearances. Last Friday he was one of nine Vodafone Warriors named in New Zealand's 49-man train-on squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.
"Ben has made a really good start at first-grade level. He's worked hard off the bench and this is a great chance for him," said Cleary.
Matulino goes into the second row with Logan Swann switching to loose forward for his 189th career match. The new player on the bench is 158-game veteran Wairangi Koopu returning for his sixth game of the year, his first since the June 6 clash against South Sydney.
When the Vodafone Warriors and Cronulla met in Sydney in June - Matulino made his first-grade debut that night - the Sharks won 24-8.
The Vodafone Warriors go into Saturday's match with a 10 wins-10 losses record this season, sitting on 24 points in a share of sixth place but 10th on points differential. This will be their second to last home match of the regular season. So far they've won seven of their 10 matches at Mt Smart Stadium.
Their last three matches have all been tense, tight contests beating Melbourne 8-6 and Brisbane 16-12 while losing to South Sydney 16-18.
Having only his second outing of the year will be fullback Wade McKinnon.
Despite being sidelined for close to six months after knee surgery, he was impressive against the Broncos. As well as scoring a try in his 100th career game, he had more runs than any player on the field - 22 - and gained 185 metres, a total bettered only by Jerome Ropati's 205 metres.

Source: www.warriors.co.nzVodafone Warriors forwards Micheal Luck and Wairangi Koopu will have key roles in the One Community initiative launched today by Vodafone Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah.
Luck (25) was named the club's first One Community ambassador while Koopu (27) has become an ambassador for Kidz First Children's Hospital, one of the Vodafone Warriors' main charity partners.
The creation of Vodafone Warriors One Community follows the launch of a game-wide One Community initiative in Australia in late 2006 when rugby league bodies banded together to work across all levels of the game and the community.
"While our primary focus is on the football side of our business, we are also striving to make a difference to people's lives through the club working in the community," said Scurrah.
"That's what this Vodafone Warriors One Community initiative is all about. As a club we have put a lot of effort into this side of the organisation and there's still a lot more work to be done.
"To ensure we are able to better cater for needs in this area, we now have a dedicated Vodafone Warriors One Community team set. The Vodafone Warriors are important to many people and we regard it as our duty to interact with them and help them in any way we can.
"Our players are aware of the positive effect they have on people and it's rewarding for them when they make a conscious contribution to society through charities and other means."
It was poignant that the Vodafone Warriors One Community initiative was launched at Kidz First Children's Hospital, a cause the club has embraced for some time.
"We are thrilled with the ongoing support of the Vodafone Warriors," said South Auckland Health Foundation executive director Pam Tregonning.
"They have been great supporters of Kidz First Children's Hospital for the past few years, and their visits are always a highlight on the Kidz First calendar."
The launch also coincided with the first day of the 2008 Trillian Trust Auckland Rugby League Community Carnival Week.
Koopu and Luck were joined at today's function by several of their team-mates. Koopu has been a regular visitor to Kidz First for several years while Luck, despite arriving in Auckland only two years ago, was named the Puma Club Person of the Year in each of his first two seasons with the Vodafone Warriors.
"Micheal has been an unsung hero, making an immense contribution off the field," said Scurrah.
"And Wairangi, who became a father for the first time not so long ago, has always had a deep interest in the welfare of patients at Kidz First.
"We're delighted two players of such fine calibre are able to have an even stronger link with the community through their appointment as ambassadors."
Scurrah also announced two special programmes which would form a critical arm of Vodafone Warriors One Community.
"One is Rugby League Reads and the other is Warriors Against Bullying (WAB)," he said.
"We are implementing these programmes through schools to help with literacy among young people. It's a programme our community and development manager Dean Bell initiated in England with a lot of success."
Scurrah also confirmed Kidz First Children's Hospital and DebRA New Zealand (Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association) would be the Vodafone Warriors' two main charity partners.
While Vodafone Warriors One Community was officially launched today, the club's work in the community is well-established.
It was evidenced when the Vodafone Warriors put on a community Christmas party at Rainbow's End last year, inviting about 120 children, parents and care givers.
"It was a fantastic day with almost everyone from the club involved, including every one of our NRL squad. It was brilliant to see the kids and our players having so much fun," said Scurrah.
Santa gave out presents before the players and kids headed for the rides. Charities invited to the party included Kidz First Children's Hospital, DebRA New Zealand, TYLA (Turn Your Life Around), the Child Cancer Foundation and the Blind and Low Vision Education Network.
The following week, Brent Tate, Evarn Tuimavave and Ryan Shortland donned their Santa hats again for the Kidz First Children's Hospital Christmas party at Sky City.
Another example of the Vodafone Warriors and the community coming together was last year's hugely successful Community Carnival Week, especially the Community Carnival Day at Mt Smart Stadium No 2 when more than 8000 fans attended.

VODAFONE WARRIORS ONE COMMUNITY 2008 - OFFICIAL PROGRAMMESRugby League Reads
Rugby League Reads is:
A literacy programme that uses rugby league's popularity to encourage children to read.
To deliver the message that reading is not only beneficial for literacy and general education, it's also fun and a great way to relax.
It will run as a pilot programme in term two of the school year and will reach approximately 1200 children.
Rugby League Reads is a five-week programme that begins with a visit from a couple of Vodafone Warriors to leave the children with reading charts, bookmarks and lesson plans that cover weeks 2-4.
The players return in week five to present prizes to the winners of the book chart and book report competitions.
This programme will also be supported by the Vodafone Warriors One Community web pages at www.warriors.co.nz
Warriors Against Bullying
The Warriors Against Bullying (WAB) pilot programme will be implemented over five weeks in terms two and three and targets Year 5 students.
The programme enables the students to be positive role models and pass on the skills learnt in the programme to younger pupils.
The initial visit to a group of Year 5 children is done within the school to deliver a lesson on the issue of bullying. This will be delivered by the Vodafone Warriors and the New Zealand Police.
The Vodafone Warriors talk to the children about the importance of not bullying and invite them to join the WAB team.
