Cowboys link with Ok Tedi Group

Fifteen managers from Ok Tedi Mining in Papua New Guinea will get an up-close look at the North Queensland Cowboys this weekend.

The group, who are enrolled in a Diploma of Management course and leadership development program at the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE in Townsville, will be special guests at the Cowboys' NRL round three clash with the Parramatta Eels at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

Today, it was the turn of the Cowboys to visit the students at the TAFE's City campus.

NRL squad member Tyson Martin, who has played for the PNG Kumuls and has been named in the 19-man team for Saturday's game, caught up with the group, who, like most PNG citizens, love their rugby league.

They were also able to meet with Cowboys General Manager - Commercial Steve Mitchell who extended the invitation to come along to watch the action at Dairy Farmers this weekend.
"I'm sure they will enjoy their night at the Cowboys," Mr Mitchell said.

"Papua New Guinea is a key market for us and our trips to our northern neighbour have shown how much the people there love the NRL and the Cowboys in particular."

Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE International Manager Colin Dwyer said this is the fourth group from Ok Tedi Mining group to participate in business training with the Institute.

The tailored program has the group coming to North Queensland several times throughout the year for two weeks of intensive training.

These managers will complete their Diploma of Management at the end of next year.

The Institute has graduated more than 25 Ok Tedi Mine managers since the program commenced in 2009.

The Cowboys' two other PNG representatives, Ray Thompson and James Segeyaro, recently visited the Ok Tedi mine which is located in the Star Mountains region of the Western Province.

The mine started operations in 1984 and has become the single largest business contributor to the economies of the Western Province and PNG.

Ok Tedi is a major producer of copper concentrate for the world smelting market in Germany, India, Japan, Korea and the Philippines. The mine exports copper as the main product but it also extracts gold and silver.

Hall back from injury and Martin added to Cowboys bench

The return of back-rower Glenn Hall after a one-week absence is the only change to the Cowboys starting line-up for the NRL Harmony Round clash with Parramatta at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday night.

A leg infection put Hall in hospital last week and forced him to miss the thrilling two-point victory against the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium but he has been declared fit to play as the Cowboys chase their first win at home in 2012.

"I'm fighting fit and had a run yesterday - all good," Hall said.

"The boys played awesome without me and I thought I'd be lucky to get back in the team, but thankfully I am.

"I'll be trying my best to prove that I'm worthy of being in there."

Cory Paterson, who took over Hall's position in the starting pack, has been included by coach Neil Henry on a six-man interchange bench which also features Tyson Martin, who has yet to make his NRL debut.

A back-rower or centre, Martin starred for the Mackay Cutters in the opening round of the Intrust Super Cup at Redcliffe on Sunday and he also impressed the coaching staff during the pre-season.

A Proserpine Brahmans junior, the 22-year-old was part of North Queensland's inaugural Toyota Cup squad in 2008 and has played for Papua New Guinea against the Australian Prime Minister's squad in their traditional end-of-season representative match.

Henry will cut his bench down to four following final training on Friday afternoon.

Saturday night's match kicks off at 6.30pm (Qld time) and will be live on Fox Sports and 4TOFM.
