McCarthy-Scarsbrook confident of improvement

Harlequins Rugby League prop Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook is confident his side will improve upon their strong performance against Wigan at the weekend with victory over Salford on Friday night.

Harlequins lost 36-12 to Wigan last Saturday but gave the current engage Super League leaders a real run for their money in what was a high tempo and lively match.

"There were a few lapses of concentration during the match with Wigan that cost us. But they are top of the league and we held them for quite a while; we'll draw positives from that and believe that we can do better against Salford at the Willows."

In the season's reverse fixture at the Stoop, Salford trailed for the majority of the match before two tries in the final ten minutes secured victory against an injury ravaged Quins side.

McCarthy Scarsbrook says he does not fear a repeat performance.

"Our match against Salford at the Stoop was one of the most disappointing results of the season; we didn't turn up that day. But we are a different team from the one that played that day and have matured since then. We need to get wins quickly so that we can get into the playoffs.

However he insists revenge is not the top priority.

"All we'll be thinking about is winning. If we climb to eighth in the table then anything can happen."

Elsewhere, there is good news for David Howell whose collar bone injury is not as bad as first feared. The Australian centre picked up a knock during the match against Wigan and will be out for the next 2-3 weeks whereas it was initially thought he could miss the rest of the season.

Louie backs England to win

Harlequins Rugby League prop and England international Louis McCarthy-Scarsbrook believes England have what it takes to overcome Australia in the Gillette Four Nations this weekend.

"I think some people were too quick to criticise England following the game against France; after all it was the first match that many of them had played together.

"When they come out against Australia on Saturday they'll have a victory under their belts and another week of training together; I think people will be in for a surprise."

England need a win against either Australia or New Zealand in the coming weeks to guarantee a place in the final at Elland Road on Saturday 14th November.

"The draw between Australia and New Zealand was great news for England, though I'm sure that the players won't be thinking about it during the coming games.

"I was at the Stoop to watch Australia and New Zealand and it was an amazing game; fast, physical and brutal. The atmosphere at the ground was great, I was here with Rob Purdham and some of the other Harlequins boys and it was great to all watch a game of rugby together."

McCarthy-Scarsbrook was called up to the England Elite Training squad earlier this year and was in the England training squad ahead of the 4 Nations. Although he played in England's warm up game against Wales, he was not included in the final Four Nations line-up.

"Of course it was disappointing not being selected to go further, especially as I thought I had a pretty good season. I went into the Wales game really fired up to prove what I could do and it was great to score that try.

"I'll keep giving it my all and hopefully I'll get my chance with England again."
