Reader Submission Profile
Barrie McDermott the 5'10 115kg prop was known and feared as the toughest meanest and hardest player on either side of the world.

His career started at oldham before going to wigan then finding his way to his beloved leeds rhinos where he played in the number 10 shirt for 10 years.

The one eyed strong man is best known for his shocking tackle that floored 6'5 120kg australian prop paul sironen in a warm up match between wigan and australia aswell as his huge hay maker on 6'7 st.helens prop Peter Shiels which ended the big aussies day and smashed his cheek bone, but his infamous clashes with bradford prop stuart fielden take the cake the "Harragon,Carroll" like battles went on for years and at times was even more violent then Chief and Spud ever got.

Barrie was also a very skillfull prop that always produced match winning off-loads.

Science holds the key to injuries says McDermott
Thu March 13, 2008

Former Leeds Rhinos legend Barrie McDermott has revealed why he thinks there have been a seemingly large number of injuries in the opening five rounds of the engage Super League season caused in the tackle area.

McDermott, writing in his column in the Leeds Rhinos official matchday programme Blue & Amber for this Friday's game against Harlequins, says he thinks a change in the offside rule this season combined with basic physics has resulted in more injuries in the collision.

The former prop forward said, "Last weekend saw another spate of injuries across Super League. I think a major factor in these collision injuries is a rule change that has come in this year that has been overlooked by most. For this season, the players have to have their front foot in line with the referee, ten metres from the play the ball. Previously you only needed your back foot on the onside line.

"That means players are now coming from nearly two metres further back. As my old mate Newton, that's Isaac not Terry, says in his second law of motion, the amount of momentum that an object has depends on two physical quantities: the mass and the velocity of the moving object in the frame of reference eg p = mv.

"In other words, if the players are running from further back, the player becomes a bigger, more powerful and more destructive entity. In all seriousness, I'm not a boffin but it must have been something that stuck in my head from my school days, so I looked it up and my hunch was right,"
added McDermott.

McDermott's rediscovery of his school science lessons comes during National Science and Engineering Week (formerly National Science Week) which runs from 7th March until 16th March with a programme of around 3,000 events running throughout the whole of the UK with the aim of celebrating science, engineering and technology and its importance in our lives.

Barrie McDermott heads for Great North Run
Wed September 26, 2007
Source: www.leedsrugby.com

You can't keep a good man down and fresh from having walked 100 miles this summer for local children's charities in Leeds, Great Britain and Leeds legend Barrie McDermott is off again, this time looking to complete the BUPA Great North Run on Sunday 30th September.

Barrie will be joined on the run by the Rhinos Media Manager Phil Daly and the pair are raising funds for local charity Leeds Mencap.

Leeds Mencap work to improve the lives and opportunities of children and adults with a learning disability and their families and carers. They run the Hawthorn Family Support Centre, East End Park, which is set to benefit from the proceeds raised from the Great North Run.

The centre, the only one of its kind in Leeds, provides support for 23 families of disabled children aged up to three.

Kate Grimshaw, fundraiser for Leeds Mencap, said: "This is a huge morale boost for everyone connected with Mencap. As well as the Hawthorn Centre we operate a residential home for 12 adults in Chapel Allerton as well as youth clubs and play schemes across Leeds."

Commenting on the run McDermott said, "This is one of the biggest challenges of my sporting life. Although I had over 10 years a professional sportsman, I never had to run 13 miles in one go so I know this will be tough, especially with my knee which is like a wonky wheel! But it is for a great charity who do a fantastic job in the city of Leeds. I'm not sure how I get myself into these things but life is about challenges and I'm really looking forward to Sunday now, honestly!"

Leeds Mencap is a local charity run exclusively for and by the people of Leeds. They provide vital services for children and adults with a learning disability and their parents and carers. Although affiliated with Mencap they are not funded by the national group so rely on local donations and sponsorship entirely.

Their services include the Hawthorn family support centre for children from 0-3 with a learning disability. The children are cared for in a playroom while their parents have the opportunity to speak to other parents who face similar issues in the first few years of their child's life. One parent said: "Hawthorns gave me support, a place to relax, and it became the highlight of our week. No one made any funny comments they just accepted us and then we started going to a local mums and tots group and I was strong enough to cope!"

Leeds Mencap run a residential home for 12 adults and various youth clubs and playschemes amongst other activities.
