Crusaders sign McPerson for 2012 season

Crusaders have announced the signing of utility forward Shannan McPherson for the 2012 season.

McPherson, 25, will join the club from NRL side South Sydney Rabbitohs on a two-year contract starting from next season.

McPherson, who can play either in the back-row or prop, is a product of the Souths youth system and has played over 80 first grade games for the Rabbitohs since his debut in 2005.

He has been a key member of the Rabbitohs team this season, making 14 appearances so far but he has now decided to take up a long-standing ambition to play overseas.

And McPherson said he was thrilled to take up that opportunity with the Crusaders.

"I am excited about joining Crusaders in 2012," McPherson said.

"I'm most fortunate that Souths were kind enough to allow me to take up this opportunity as playing overseas is something I have always wanted to do.

"Crusaders are a club on the way up. I made plenty of my own inquiries into their structure and set-up and everything was really positive.

"It's a new challenge and a new adventure for my family and I and we look forward to being part of club next year."

Crusaders head coach Iestyn Harris added:

"Shannan is an exceptional player and I'm really pleased to have him on board," he said.

"We've been really busy with out recruitment for next season and Shannan ticks a lot of our boxes.

"He's strong, athletic, hard-working and he has a great attitude. Shannan has shown a real desire to come over here and prove himself.

"He's been a regular in a very good South Sydney side where there is real competition for places.

"Shannan is still young but he's firmly established himself in the NRL and now he wants to take up a new challenge here with us at the Crusaders.

"His energy and work rate are going to be really valuable assets for us and I'm looking forward to working with him next season."

Rabbitohs sign Matt King; McPherson heads to Super League
Wed June 29, 2011

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are delighted to announce the signing of representative back Matt King for the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

King, 30, has played 170 first grade games for both the Melbourne Storm in the NRL and the Warrington Wolves in the English Super League, scoring over 100 tries in his nine-year career to date.

King has also played ten Tests for Australia, nine State of Origin matches for NSW and two games for Country Origin, as well as being selected in the inaugural ESL Exiles team which defeated England earlier this year.

Standing 190cm and weighing in at 100kg, King is one of the leading players in the English Super League competition today, and will return home to Australia over the next two years.

Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson is pleased to be bringing an experienced outside back to the Club.

"We're really happy to be able to attract a player with the experience and talent that Matt King possesses to our Club for the next two years," Mr Richardson said.

"Matt was one of the leading lights during Melbourne's dominance of the competition, alongside players such as Greg Inglis and Michael Crocker, and also our new Head Coach in Michael Maguire.

"He has the runs on the board and we're looking forward to welcoming Matt and his young family to South Sydney next season."

The South Sydney Rabbitohs also announce that utility forward Shannan McPherson has sought a release from the remaining year of his contract with the Club and will be moving on at the end of the season to take up a long-term contract in the English Super League.

McPherson, a South Sydney junior, has played over 80 first grade games for the Rabbitohs in a first grade career which began in 2005.

McPherson approached the Club about gaining a release to take up the opportunity in the Super League, a request to which the Rabbitohs agreed.

Mr Richardson says McPherson will be missed at the Club

"It's always tough when one of your juniors moves on but we wish Shannan the best of luck with his new adventure," Mr Richardson said.

"He received an offer to head to the UK and felt it was a good time for him and his young family to experience a bit of the world and ply his trade overseas.

"He approached us about a release and we felt that we couldn't stand in his way.

"He has been a great influence at our Club both on and off the field and we wish him and his family the best come season's end.

"For the moment Shannan remains a Rabbitoh and he and the team will be doing everything they can to extend their season into the finals for the rest of this year."

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have one of the richest histories in Rugby League. Established in 1908, the South Sydney Club has won 20 first grade premierships and provided 63 internationals for the Australian side, and have famously worn their cardinal red and myrtle green colours since inception. The rebirth of the Rabbitohs began on 7 June, 2006 through a new partnership between Russell Crowe, Peter Holmes a Court and the then 8000 Members of the Club. The Rabbitohs made the semi-finals for the first time in 18 years in 2007, and strengthened their Ticketed Membership to over 12,000 with over 20,000 Total Members in 2011.
