Source: www.titans.com.auThe Jetstar Gold Coast Titans will roll out the big guns in Coffs Harbour this weekend, with Head Coach John Cartwright today naming a near full-strength line-up for Saturday night's pre-season trial match against Souths.
Jetstar Titans captain and halfback Scott Prince will form a new-look halves combination with Indigenous All Stars teammate Greg Bird while fellow stars Preston Campbell, Luke Bailey, Ashley Harrison, William Zillman and Coffs Harbour junior Kevin Gordon will all line up for their first pre-season matches for 2011.
In a significant step for flyer David Mead, the Papua New Guinean International will play his first game since suffering a season-ending foot injury in Round 16, 2010 after being named in the starting line-up on the wing.
Former Newcastle and Sydney Roosters utility Riley Brown will be given the chance to impress at hooker in the absence of regular No.9 Nathan Friend, who is still working his way back to full fitness following off-season surgery.
Friend (shoulder), Anthony Laffranchi (hamstring), Brad Meyers (knee), Esi Tonga (broken nose) and Ryan James (suspension) are the only absentees from the 26-man playing squad to take on the Rabbitohs.
Bird, who played the first part of last season in the halves alongside Prince, said he was again looking forward to wearing the Titans' No.6 jersey, which has been left open following the retirement of Dual International Mat Rogers.
"Like I've said before, it's whatever is going to be the best for the team,'' said Bird.
"I think I'll be starting there but there are a lot of other guys in the squad, Jordan Rankin and Luke Capewell, who will probably get an opportunity to show their talents there as well.
"It's a long football season and you don't really know where you are going to play or if you're going to play the whole year in the one position.''
Zillman performed strongly when given an opportunity on the wing at the back end of last season following the loss of Mead to injury but will be eager to impress at fullback with the Round 1 clash against St George Illawarra at Skilled Park on Saturday, March 12 under a month away.
The 24-year-old also said Bird's versatility would be valuable for the team heading into 2011.
"The bloke plays for Australia so just to have him in the team is extremely valuable for us,'' said Zillman of Bird.
"Obviously he goes very well in the backrow but he's showed signs that he can be a bit of a ball player as well so playing him at five-eighth, we're certainly not losing anything there.
"I've just got to get out there and do my best. All the other boys are going to be doing the same so hopefully I can get a spot there in the team and if it is at fullback, then that'll be great.''

Source: www.titans.com.auJetstar Gold Coast Titans speedster David Mead has turned to Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt for inspiration as he prepares to make his comeback from a foot injury in 2011.
The former PNG international is well on the road to recovery from a foot operation he underwent in Round 16 last year and is following a similar philosophy to the Olympic Mantra of 'Faster, Higher, Stronger' in a bid to regain his spot on the Jetstar Titans wing this season.
"My foot is at about 90 per cent now so I feel like I can get a lot quicker. I have just been watching a few Usain Bolt sprints at home so hopefully I can get half as quick as him,'' he joked.
"Ideally I would like to try to get a bit quicker and especially put on a bit of size but hopefully not lose the speed."
With the likes of fellow speedster Kevin Gordon, new recruit Joe Vickery and Tweed Heads Seagulls winger Dominic Peyroux competing for spots on the wing in 2011, Mead has stepped up his preparations by going the extra mile with new housemates Luke Capewell, who has joined the club from Souths, and Under-20s player Douglas Veatupu.
"I have always done an extra half hour on my own at home concentrating on skills, but now I have two new roommates that I can head down to the fields with in the afternoon for some extra training and some speed work as well,'' he said.
Mead has spent a total of six months on the sidelines due to his foot injury and just when the talented youngster was starting to get up to speed he suffered a minor setback during the start of pre-season training at the end of November.
"During the pre-season last year I was feeling good but just got a little niggle in my knee and that sort of slowed things down a bit,'' he said.
"But I am pretty happy to get back on the field now I'm feeling good and just want to get back into the routine."
The 22-year-old believes he is still on track for the club's Round 1 encounter against the 2010 Telstra Premiers when the Jetstar Titans take on St George Illawarra at Skilled Park on Saturday, March 12.
