Manly Injury Update
Sat April 19, 2008
by Matthew O'Neill
Manly scored a couragoues 20-16 victory against Parramatta last night with four Sea Eagles players forced to leave the field during the match and Manly also had to overcome a lopsided penalty count to get the two points.

Winger Michael Bani has been cleared of any serious injury. Manly's medical staff will assess his situation before next week's game against the Bulldogs at Brookvale Oval. Bani was stretchered off the field seconds before half-time.

Steve Menzies hopes of beating Terry Lamb's all-time premiership record for appearances this season appears out of reach after suffering a low grade hamstring tear and will miss at least 2 weeks. Menzies was injured supporting a break leading up to the opening try where Bani scored following some crazy football by Eric Grothe in the lead up to the try.

Prop Mark Bryant suffered a knee injury and is in doubt for next week and Luke Williamson suffered a concussion and will be assessed before next game.

Manly led 10-4 at half-time against the Eels and extended that lead to 14-4 before two quick tries got Parramatta back to 16-14. A try to Heath L'Estrange in the 75th minute saw the Sea Eagles grab the lead and they held on for the two points despite having four players off the field.

The Sea Eagles at home to the Bulldogs next Saturday night with kick off at 5:30pm.

The Manly Sea Eagles today announced that club legend Steve Menzies would complete his stellar career in maroon and white in next year's Centenary 2008 season.

Manly put contract talks on hold during the recent final series but are delighted that the game's try scoring record holder for a forward will complete his career where it began.

The former Harbord Devils junior made his debut with Manly in 1993 against the Brisbane Broncos at Brookvale Oval.

Menzies has played a mammoth 322 games for Manly (a club record) and scored 167 tries (club record).

The club's favourite son has played for NSW on 20 occasions and played 15 Tests for Australia.

Manly chief executive Grant Mayer said it was fitting that one of the game's greatest ever players would celebrate his final season in the game's 100th season.

"Steve Menzies is admired by fans of all clubs and is a treasure at Manly.

"On and off the field he sets a standard for others and although he is turning 34 in December remains we have no doubts he wwill continue as one of our best next season.

"He wants to play and we want him to play - the club will ensure his magnificent career is celebrated in style and planning is well underway for some milestone events,"
Mr Mayer said.

Menzies said there was never any doubt about him playing another season with his beloved Sea Eagles.

"I have enjoyed the 2007 season and will savour every game I have left knowing next season will be my last.

"I'm proud to have played my entire career with the club I have been passionate about since by late grandpop first took me to Brookvale Oval.My team mates are my best mates and I don't want to contemplate life without football,"
Menzies said.

Manly captain Matt Orford applauded the signing of the Beaver.

"He is an inspiration to the side and the fans love him - we would love to go one better than this season and make his farewell one to remember for all time," Orford said.
