Merrin signs three year extension with Dragons

The St George Illawarra Dragons have announced that NSW Blues representative prop Trent Merrin has agreed to a three-year contract extension that will see him remain at the Club until at least the end of 2015.

The Shellharbour junior made his first-grade debut for the Dragons against the Penrith Panthers in Round 12 of the 2009 season and has played 52 NRL games to date.

Merrin, 22, is a graduate of the Dragons High Performance Unit who played an integral role for the Dragons Toyota Cup team that played in the National Youth Competition between 2008 and 2009.

"It was an easy decision as I love the Club and want to be able to play my whole career here," said Merrin. "I have grown up watching players like Ben Hornby, Dean Young, Ben Creagh and Matt Cooper who are local boys who have been one club players and I want to do that as well.

"I have learned so much already at this Club and am excited about the future and couldn't be happier in knowing that I am here for at least for the next three season."

Dragons CEO Peter Doust is delighted with the re-signing of Merrin and his decision to extend his tenure at the Club.

"It is fantastic that Trent, another of our local juniors has chosen to extend his stay with our Club and we can all look forward to his ongoing positive contributions both on and off the field over the next few years," said Doust.

"Long-term contracts can be difficult at times but I am delighted that we have been able to work through this challenge and retain such an exciting, established talent."
