Source: www.titans.com.auJetstar Gold Coast Titans cult hero Brad Meyers has today announced his retirement from rugby league due to injury.
After a distinguished career which began with the Brisbane Broncos in 2000 and included representative caps for Australia (4 Tests) and Queensland (3 State of Origins), the 30-year-old prop will retire from the game effective immediately after being ruled out for the rest of this season with a wrist injury.
The inaugural Titan, who is a qualified builder by trade, said he now planned to focus on his career post-football in the building industry.
"It's not the way I would have liked my career to finish but sometimes that's what happens, you can't control injuries,'' said Meyers, who has played 177 NRL matches for Brisbane (2000-04) and the Jetstar Titans (2007-11) as well as 51 Super League games for Bradford Bulls (2005-06).
"I'm just glad that rugby league has been such a big part of my life for so long. I've had some great memories along the way and it's been great to be involved in the start-up of the Titans.
"I'm now planning to work in the building industry and want to spend as much time as I can with my wife Anitia and our two-month old Sophia.''
Jetstar Titans Managing Director Michael Searle said Meyers' experience and leadership qualities had been a valuable asset in helping establish the great culture at the Titans.
"Sometimes it's disappointing when injuries get in the way of players' longevity but Brad's had a great career so he's got nothing to be sad about,'' said Searle.
"We brought him back from England to be part of our inaugural season in 2007 and he has been a great contributor to what the club has been able to achieve since.
"I'm sure he'll remain a part of this club even in retirement as he begins the next chapter in his life.''
Jetstar Titans Coach John Cartwright said Meyers had been an important part of the Titans' first generation.
"Red' was our inaugural 'Clubman of the Year' so that says a lot about what he has been able to bring to the club both on and off the field,'' said Cartwright.
"He had a serious knee injury in our first season but to able to come back and play 75 first grade games for the club is a big effort. It's disappointing that it has to end but he's had a great career.''

Source: www.titans.com.auJetstar Gold Coast Titans representative back rower Anthony Laffranchi, young centre Esi Tonga and experienced forward Brad Meyers have been named to make their anticipated returns for Friday night's blockbuster local derby against the Brisbane Broncos at Skilled Park.
Jetstar Titans Coach John Cartwright today named a new look 18-man squad for the clash with Laffranchi to play his first game for 2011 since undergoing off-season surgery (shoulder and wrist) and Tonga named to play his first match in the NRL since late 2009.
Meyers has been named on an extended five-man interchange bench after missing the opening two rounds as he continued his recovery back from minor knee surgery during the pre-season.
The match will mark a big occasion for Tonga, who played 24 NRL matches for the Jetstar Titans in 2008 and 2009 before a torn pectoral muscle ruled him out of action last season. Laffranchi will play his 191st NRL match and his 89th match for the club.
Cartwright said Tonga had earned his recall to first grade in the absence of winger Kevin Gordon, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
"Esi has had all sorts of injury problems and set-backs. He played in our first trial against the Broncos and if he didn't get injured in that game he probably would have been there to start the year,'' said Cartwright.
"He went out and played for Ipswich last weekend and did everything asked of him so the injury to Kevie has opened up a spot for him.''
To make way for the return of Laffranchi and Mark Minichiello to the starting back row, youngster Bodene Thompson will switch to the centres while Greg Bird has been named at five-eighth in place of Luke Capewell. Capewell (Ipswich) and centre Clinton Toopi (Burleigh) will play in the Queensland Cup this weekend.
Cartwright said the changes to the team were partly a combination of form during the opening two rounds and the return of senior players from injury.
"I think losing a couple of games and having the players available back from injury made it a combination of things,'' said Cartwright.
"The guys that have come in were going to be in the side. They've been the pillars of the side for the last couple of years.
"They've had injuries in the off-season but their preparation demands they get picked. They've done all the training and they're available so they need to be there.
"I think we've probably picked a side to get our defence on track and we want to base a lot of our stuff around our defence. It won't change our style of play too much but I think it gives us a stronger look.''
Tickets for Friday night's match can be purchased through www.ticketek.com.au. Gates open at 5.10pm with Under-20s action kicking off at 5.15pm.
