Salford sign Joel Moon and Jordan James
Sat September 10, 2011
Salford City Reds have signed Australian utility back Joel Moon and Crusaders RL prop forward Jordan James on two-year deals.

Twenty-three-year-old Moon, who will link up with the Reds in pre-season from New Zealand Warriors, is seen as a replacement for Warrington Wolves-bound Stefan Ratchford, although he can also play centre, second row and loose forward.

James, 31, a Wales international, is the latest Crusaders player to secure his future away from the Wrexham club, who play their final Engage Super League game at Wigan Warriors tomorrow.

He played for Wigan and Widnes before heading to south Wales to link up with Crusaders in their inaugural Super League campaign.

Moon back in centres to take on Knights

Joel Moon returns to the centres and Ukuma Ta'ai is included on an extended five-man bench for the Vodafone Warriors' 23rd-round NRL match against the Newcastle Knights at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland on Saturday night.

The encounter will be the feature attraction on a triple header bill preceded by the Vodafone Junior Warriors facing the Knights (5.15pm kick-off) and the Auckland Vulcans, featuring a number of Vodafone Warriors NRL players, kick off at 3.10pm in their New South Wales Cup match against Wentworthville.

Moon, who was in the line-up for the previous three wins against Canterbury-Bankstown, South Sydney and Canberra, missed the 20-21 Brisbane defeat after originally being named to play. He stayed home after his son spent a night in hospital after falling ill. This week he's back on the left edge after utility Lewis Brown was used in the role against the Broncos.

Ta'ai is in line to make his NRL return after being sidelined with a knee injury for several weeks. He has made only six NRL appearances this season, the last of them in the 12-6 11th-round win against South Sydney on May 22.

Ta'ai was 18th man in Brisbane last weekend after appearing for the Vulcans the previous two weeks. He comes onto the bench for Elijah Taylor, who is being rested after excelling in his NRL rookie season, making 17 consecutive appearances since his debut against Cronulla in round three.

"Elijah has been really great for us but we're giving him a break this week to rest up a few little niggles," said Vodafone Warriors head coach Ivan Cleary.

The Vodafone Warriors are sitting sixth in the NRL after 22 rounds, locked on 26 points with Newcastle and Wests Tigers while the Vodafone Junior Warriors top the NYC ladder and the Vulcans are third in the NSW Cup. The latter two are both guaranteed of playing in their finals while the Vodafone Warriors can all but secure a spot in the NRL play-offs with victory this weekend.

Between them the three teams form the most prolific attacking force linked to any one of the NRL's 16 clubs, having scored a combined total of more than 1800 points while winning a total of 41 matches. The Vodafone Junior Warriors and the Vulcans are the only teams in their competitions to bring up 700 points so far, both reaching the mark last weekend (the Vodafone Junior Warriors with 725 and the Vulcans exactly 700). The Vodafone Warriors also rank among the NRL's top points-scorers.

With eight points against the Broncos, standoff James Maloney has now gone past 150 points for the second straight year, his total sitting on 154. He was the competition's leading points-scorer but Chris Sandow has vaulted to 160 after his 20-point haul in South Sydney's 56-6 trouncing of Parramatta last night.
