Sharks sign Morris for two years
Sat June 27, 2009
Source: www.sharks.com.au

In adding to their depth of talent for the 2010 season, the Sharks have secured the services of Wests Tigers utility player John Morris on a two-year deal.

Originally from Scone in country NSW, Morris, who has played 185 NRL games for the Knights, Eels, and since 2007 for the Tigers, will bring a wealth of experience to the Sharks squad next year.

While providing much-needed utility value to the Sharks line-up, with Morris equally adept at hooker, halfback or five eighth, the player himself is hoping the move will allow him to cement a permanent place in the NRL in the number nine jersey.

"It is an opportunity to play at hooker which is a position where I believe my best footy is ahead of me," Morris said. "Its also exciting to be coming to a club coached by Ricky Stuart and which has a good mix of quality young players, plus the likes of Paul Gallen, Anthony Tupou and Trent Barrett."

Morris also added that while he was looking forward to the move, he was leaving the Tigers on good terms after an enjoyable three years at the club.

"They were in a position where the Tigers were tight with the salary cap. I spoke with Tim (Sheens) who explained that about the cap and thought it was a good opportunity for me at the Sharks, so we are definitely parting on good terms," Morris said.

Sharks coach Ricky Stuart was pleased to be able to announce the Morris acquisition and was in no doubt the Tigers star could provide some spark to his Sharks team.

"John is a very experienced and accomplished player who will certainly add a lot to our team," Stuart said. "He will also be a very important asset in being able to assist with the development of some of the good young players we have at the club. He'll be very handy in helping to bring them through."

In addition to acquiring a quality performer on the field, the Sharks will also benefit from Morris's character off it. The Tigers nominee for the Ken Stephens Medal in 2008, Morris is an excellent ambassador for the NRL and has been extremely active in promoting the Motor Neurone Foundation.

The signing of Morris continues the Sharks recruiting for the future, with the club last week agreeing to terms with Manly forward Adam Cuthbertson for the next two seasons, while negotiations are on-going in relation to extending the current contracts of some of their up and coming young stars.

John Morris signs with Wests Tigers
Mon June 26, 2006
by Matthew O'Neill
Parramatta utility John Morris has signed with the Wests Tigers for three seasons where he'll be the replacement for departing halfback Scott Prince next season.

Wests Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell said the club was very happy to secure the services of Morris until the end of the 2009 season.

"John will fill the half-back role left by Scott Prince.

"He is a very experienced player with plenty of talent, and his versatility means he can also cover five-eighth, hooker and even lock if need be.

"I am sure John will be a vital asset for the Wests Tigers.''

Morris said,

"I am looking forward to the new challenge of playing for the Wests Tigers.

"They have a great young team and I am sure my game will improve even further under coach Tim Sheens.''

Morris, 25, has played 112 first grade games since making his debut for Newcastle in Round 17 of the 2001 season. Morris played 31 games for the Knights in 2001-02 and has played 81 games for the Eels since 2003. He has scored 27 tries (nine of them with Newcastle), nine goals and two drop-goals in his career to date.

Hailing from the Scone Thoroughbreds Junior Rugby League Club, Morris played for Country Origin in 2002-03.

The news of Morris leaving Parramatta to join Wests Tigers is a major boost for the defending Premiers as they were seeking a direct replacement for Scott Prince and it's a big blow for the Eels as they have lost another off contracted player.
