Scotland Rugby league celebrate Hogmany by announcing their annual Player of the Year for each nation team, with Iain Morrison lifting the Dave Valentine Award as top performer in the senior team. Morrison was selected by the Scotland management team of coach Steve McCormack, assistant Dave Rotheram and manager Richard Thewliss.
Second-rower Morrison now plays for McCormack at Widnes Vikings, having also played at hometown club London Broncos, Hull KR and Huddersfield Giants, where Valentine, Scotland's greatest ever rugby league player, made his name after leaving Hawick. Valentine captained Great Britain to World Cup glory in 1954, while Morrison helped Scotland to a victory over Fiji in the 2008 World Cup, their first win in the finals tournament. Morrison, whose father is Glaswegian, has also represented Scotland at the Under-19 Rugby Union World Cup while with Harlequins.
"Iain was the stand-out performer for Scotland throughout the World Cup," said McCormack, "and is a clear winner. His attitude and application on and off the field were superb and he set an example for others to follow. Ian Henderson (New Zealand Warriors hooker) also deserves a lot of credit for a superb tournament." Morrison also won the Rugby League International Federation nomination as top Scottish player during the World Cup in Australia.
Edinburgh Eagles forward John Cox was voted top player for the Scotland A side. After three years in the team, Cox ? who has played rugby union in the English Premiership and Heineken Cup and now plays for Currie ? was a driving force in helping Scotland finish second in the Amateur Four Nations Championship last summer with wins over Ireland and England Lionhearts.
Manchester Metropolitan University's Scott Porteous wins the Roy Kinnear Award as Scotland Students Player of the Year, twelve months after being considered the stand-out performer for Scotland A team. It is fitting that Liverpool Buccaneers hooker Porteous, a Wiganer, should win the Roy Kinnear Award, named after the Heriots, Scotland and British Lions union star who became a big money smash hit at Wigan in the late 1920s. It is hoped that Porteous will receive his award from Roy's grandson, the actor Rory Kinnear, who starred as Dennis Thatcher in last night's BBC TV drama 'Margaret Thatcher: The Long Walk to Finchley'.
The awards will be presented in the New Year.
