QCup Rd 2 Sunshine Coast 35 Souths Logan 22

IT'S amazing to think of what the final scoreline could have been if both teams had capitalised on all their chances.

In the end however, it was the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles who proved too good for the Souths Logan Magpies; coming away with a morale-boosting 35-22 win in front of their home crowd.

While the high-scoring game was riddled with errors from both sides, it was also an entertaining contest, with both young teams showing their talent in various stages of the match.

It was the Sunshine Coast who had almost all the ball in the opening exchanges; however gritty goal-line defence from the Magpies managed to repel their advances early in the half.

After finally making their first foray into the Sea Eagles territory, the Magpies were the first on the board, with rangy centre Dallas Anderson producing some fancy footwork to deceive the defenders.

The home side were then able to level the scores after again benefiting from the majority of possession; firstly through some impressive work from Hughie Stanley and again when Kane Richards lunged over from dummy half for his first of two tries for the afternoon.

With halftime approaching, a good catch and a strong run from Souths winger Walter Imo saw him drag three defenders with him over the line.

The kick from Josh Damen drew scores level and it seemed they would remain that way going into the break.

However, man of the match Sea Eagles skipper Todd Murphy saw to it that his side would go into the sheds holding a slender 13-12 lead after potting over a field goal after the siren.

Both sides did improve their handling in the second half and the game lifted a notch accordingly.

There were 32 points scored between the two sides in the second half as they showed off their attacking intent; and they included some great tries scored from good kicks.

With the wind at his back, fullback Stanley put in a massive kick that proved too much for Damen, with the ball bouncing off his chest into the waiting arms of Mitchell Buckett who had run in to gather any crumbs.

Souths too benefited from a high ball, with Ben Cronin's kick to the corner finding a flying Mat Templeman to at that stage pull the Magpies back into contention.

While the conditions had a bearing on the overall quality game, there were many positive signs to come out for the two sides; most notably the performances from their youngsters.

However, both coaches will know their teams cannot afford a similarly ill-disciplined display next week.

Souths were also dealt an early blow when hooker Matt Duncan, who was making his debut for the Magpies, was struck down with a knee injury in the opening minute.

Wade Liddell came off the bench to take his place, but with the Magpies already missing key personnel like Phil Dennis, Mat Pitman and Cameron Joyce; things will not get any easier in coming rounds.

The Sea Eagles will next host the Tweed Heads Seagulls on Saturday, while Souths Logan will take on the Central Queensland Capras in Gladstone.

SUNSHINE COAST SEA EAGLES 35 (Kane Richards 2, Hughie Stanley, Mitchell Buckett, Dale Middleton, Todd Murphy tries; Dale Middleton 5 goals; Todd Murphy field goal) def SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES 22 (Walter Imo, Matt Templeman, Dallas Anderson, Dario Esposito tries; Josh Damen 3 goals) at Sunshine Coast Stadium.
