Warrington Wolves scrum-half Richie Myler will miss the start of the new Super League season after dislocating an elbow in his side's Boxing Day friendly against Widnes Vikings.
The former Widnes and Salford City Reds half-back left the field in obvious pain 29 minutes into yesterday's game at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, where winger Rhys Evans scored two first-half tries to help the Wolves to a 32-18 victory.
"It's a significant injury and one that's come at a bad time," said Wolves coach Tony Smith.
"He's been training exceptionally well and he was definitely keyed up for a big start to the season.
"But he may just have to delay that a little bit - it's a blow for him."
Myler, who is a member of England coach Steve McNamara's elite training squad, may be forced to pull out of Warrington's pre-season trip to Australia.
The Wolves are due to fly out on Saturday week for a three-week training camp, culminating in a match against South Sydney on January 28.
Widnes also suffered a blow when new signing Anthony Watts limped off after only five minutes while another newcomer, former St Helens hooker Scott Moore, was sin-binned on the stroke of half-time for his part in a flare-up.

England internationals Richie Myler and Ryan Atkins are among five Warrington players to agree contract extensions with the Wolves.
Ex-Salford City Reds scrum-half Myler, 21, and former Wakefield Trinity Wildcats centre Atkins, who both joined the club two years ago, have signed two-year extensions which will keep them at the Halliwell Jones Stadium until the end of 2015.
Utility player Simon Grix, 26, will also be at Warrington for another four years after signing a three-year extension, which will enable him to complete a decade at the club.
Welsh international winger Rhys Williams, 21, who was out of contract, has signed a new 12-month deal, and centre Matty Blythe, 22, has committed himself to the club until the end of 2014.
Warrington head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith said: "I'm delighted to re-sign five young British players who have had tremendous seasons and who are looking to keep on improving.
"It shows their commitment and the direction that the club is heading in as well as their desire for success, which suits the ambition of our club."
