Source: www.titans.com.auThe Jetstar Gold Coast Titans will join the fight against men's cancer when they wear special yellow shoelaces and armbands against Penrith at Skilled Park on Saturday night to raise funds and awareness for the Cancer Council's Call to Arms Round.
Alarming statistics show that more than half of all Australian men will develop cancer by the age of 85 and all NRL clubs are uniting in the fight against cancer in men by wearing something yellow, raising funds and encouraging fans to get involved this weekend.
The yellow shoelaces will also be sold at the Titans vs Penrith match at Skilled Park on Saturday night for $5 a pair, with all funds raised helping to prevent and detect cancers in men, find new treatments, as well as support men in need by funding Cancer Council's important cancer research, prevention and support programs.
Jetstar Titans duo Luke O'Dwyer and Michael Henderson have both had their lives touched by cancer in different ways in recent years and are getting right behind the fight to raise awareness for men's cancer.
O'Dwyer sadly lost his brother Ryan to leaukaemia in 1998 while Henderson had a melanoma successfully removed from his back last year.
"My brother passed away coming on 12 years ago now so it's something that I hold close to my heart and it's definitely a reason to go out there and play some good footy,'' said O'Dwyer.
"It's pretty scary that one in two males under the age of 85 are getting cancer. It's almost like the common cold. It can strike anyone at any time.
"If we can create some more awareness about it then it's a job well done.''
Henderson urged males of all ages to get regular skin checks based on his experience last year when a routine check-up revealed he had a melanoma which subsequently had to be removed.
"I guess it was a shock to me. It was just out of pure luck that we found it,'' said Henderson.
"It was the off-season and my wife said you should go and get your skin checked because I hadn't been for a while.
"Luckily enough I went and got one done and it was a stage three melanoma so it was pretty serious and I had to go and get a fair chunk of skin taken off.
"So don't wait until tomorrow or think you're too young for it. You just have to be very conscientious and go and checked up as much as you can.''
Last year more than 1,600 clubs across the nation held a Call To Arms match to raise over $500,000. In 2011, Cancer Council hopes to inspire 2,000 clubs to raise $700,000 for the fight against cancer in men.
Funds raised through Call To Arms will help prevent and detect cancers in men, find new treatments, as well as support men in need by funding Cancer Council's important cancer research, prevention and support programs.

Source: www.titans.com.auJetstar Gold Coast Titans dynamic duo Nathan Friend and Luke O'Dwyer have put their slippers on and relaxed with students at the Titans Learning Centre in support of Lifeline's Stress Down Day.
Students at the Titans Learning Centre (TLC) slipped into their pyjamas for a fun-filled day of learning with their local NRL heroes.
Stress Down Day, to be held this Friday, July 23, encourages schools and workplaces to have fun in wearing slippers or dressing up or down for the day.
Friend says kicking the football and playing on the trampoline with his two sons, Axel and Oliver, helps him relax as he shares the influence of his supportive, stress-free parents.
"I was lucky to be brought up with stress free parents but unfortunately today parents can be little bit on edge by finance and other things,'' said Friend.
"Unfortunately the child seems to be the one that suffers because they don't get the love that's required because parents are stressed.''
"I think it's great what Lifeline are doing.
"Sometimes it's people you least expect to call up for help and you never know you may be there one day.''
The TLC initiative provides players with opportunities to engage with young minds whilst being role models and Jetstar Titans Community Program Manager Sharon Hodges said the 'Stress Down' theme was a positive message for everyone.
"Nathan and Luke are really good guys that love spending time with kids, relaxing, reading and doing what they love", said Hodges.
"Stress down day is all about raising awareness and funds for lifeline."
Lifeline's Stress Down Day provides Australians with information related to stress, with funds going to Lifeline's 24-hour telephone services.
Stress Down Day is being held this Friday, July 23 and is recognised as Lifeline's key national fundraising campaign.
