Raiders welcome back Orford

The Canberra Raiders will welcome back half back Matt Orford to the team this weekend, for the important match against the Wests Tigers at Canberra Stadium.

Orford has been missing from the team for the past two weeks with a back injury and his return sees rookie halfback Sam Williams return to the Toyota Cup team.

The Raiders were boosted last weekend by the return of both star fullback Josh Dugan and inspirational leader Alan Tongue and Raiders Coach David Furner said he expects both players to improve again this weekend.

"I thought both Josh and Alan were good in their first games back and I'm sure they'll improve again this week with some more metres in the legs," Furner said. "We need to improve as a team this weekend and it comes down to individual accountability and making sure we do the little things right individually to make that team performance better."

Furner said the team isn't far away from producing their best performances and said he expects the team to be up for the match against the Tigers at home.

"We played really well in the first half against Newcastle but some individual errors and decisions went against us, so we need to learn how to recover from those when they happen," he said. "The team is really looking to get a win this weekend against the Tigers, especially in front of the home fans."

Rookie Williams replaces injured Orford

Raiders young gun Sam Williams will play halfback for the Green Machine on Saturday night against the Cowboys in Townsville, after Matt Orford was ruled out for a week today with a back injury.

Raiders Coach David Furner said with the limited preparation time for this week's match the team couldn't afford to risk Orford and said it gives Sam Williams a chance to have another crack at first grade.

"Matt sustained an injury from the weekend after copping a knock in the back from Petero Civoniceva on the weekend and hasn't been able to train so it gives a good opportunity to Sam Williams," Furner said.

"Matt was very keen to play and he's disappointed that he can't. I spoke to the medical staff and he won't be training tomorrow and because we only have two training sessions before we head to North Queensland we need to take the fittest team as possible."

Orford is expected to miss one match.

Other changes for the Raiders include a switch at hooker, with Glen Buttriss moving into the starting side with Travis Waddell moving to the bench. Joel Thompson has also been named at centre for the match and trained well this morning after having a week on the sideline.
