Orford named Manly captain
Sat November 11, 2006
by Matthew O'Neill
Halfback Matt Orford has been named Manly captain following the retirement of Ben Kennedy in a decision of no great surprise.

Orford joined the Sea Eagles in 2006 and enjoyed a fantastic season until the second week of the Finals and he gave Manly the organisation and control they needed.

Manly coach Des Hasler announced Orford as the club's new captain at an orientation presentation at the club's training headquarters at the Sydney Academy of Sport at Narrabeen.

Hasler said, "He's a thinker, a good citizen, a leader and he has the respect of his team mates - he will do a difficult job well."

Even though it was obvious decision, Orford was taken by surprise of the decision. Orford said, "I hadn't given it much thought but to follow an inspirational captain like Ben Kennedy into the role at such a great club is an honour.

"I'm humbled really but I accept the role with open arms and a captain is only as good as the team he leads.

I have plenty of experience and back up all over the field and I will be looking for the support of proven players like Steve Menzies, Brent Kite, Steve Bell, Jamie Lyon and others."

Manly CEO Grant Mayer said Orford's reputation on and off the field earned him the position.

"It's a coach's call but Matt will have the support of the entire organisation and I am sure the fans will welcome the appointment."

The Sea Eagles will again be one of the top four contenders and with Orford leading the way at halfback they are in a prime position to have a genuine shot at winning their 7th Premiership.

Seven more players added to Kangaroos train-on squad
Mon September 18, 2006
by Rleague.com
The ARL have named seven players out of last weekends NRL departing sides Manly and Newcastle in the Australian train-on squad for the upcoming Prime Ministers XIII clash and the Tri-Nations series.

Andrew Johns, Matthew Gidley and Ben Kennedy weren't considered due to representative retirements and Danny Buderus made himself unavailable for the Tri Nations prior to suspension.

Matt Orford, Brett Stewart and Kurt Gidley have been included despite never playing State or Test Football previously. Brent Kite and Steven Bell played State of Origin this year and Steve Simpson played for Australia.

The train-on squad is:

Knights: Kurt Gidley, Steve Simpson

Sea Eagles: Steven Bell, Brent Kite, Steve Menzies, Matt Orford, Brett Stewart

Raiders: Nil

Eels: Eric Grothe Jnr, Jarryd Hayne, Nathan Hindmarsh

Cowboys: Luke O'Donnell, Johnathan Thurston, Carl Webb

Warriors: Steven Price

Wests Tigers: Robbie Farah, Scott Prince

Panthers: Craig Gower, Luke Priddis, Craig Stapleton, Trent Waterhouse, Rhys Wesser

Sharks: Paul Gallen

Roosters: Craig Fitzgibbon, Chris Flannery, Amos Roberts, Anthony Tupou

Rabbitohs: Nathan Merritt

The team for the Prime Minister's XIII, to be coached by Mal Meninga, will be named later today.

The Kangaroos squad for the Tri Nations, coached by Ricky Stuart, will be finalised on Monday 2 October.

Players from the losing semi-final sides this weekend will be added to the train-on squad next Monday.
