Parker pens Leigh deal

Former Bradford Bulls, Warrington Wolves and Salford City Reds forward Rob Parker has signed for his hometown club Leigh.

The 30-year-old prop or second rower, who originated from amateur club Leigh East, spent the last two months of the 2011 season on loan from Salford at Castleford, where he made eight appearances including the Tigers' Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-final loss to Leeds Rhinos.

Centurions chief executive Trevor Barton said: "The club are delighted to welcome a player and person of Rob's calibre.

"He has played his entire career in Super League up until this point and we are pleased he has chosen to join us at the Sports Village."

Rob Parker scored a last-gasp try to clinch a dramatic Engage Super League victory for Castleford Tigers over Crusaders RL in Wrexham.

The video ref ruled in Parker's favour as he was trapped underneath two defenders on the line with two minutes left in a match the defeated Welshmen, who led 14-6 at half-time, will feel they should have had sewn up long before the end.

The result lifts Castleford, who were without player of the year Rangi Chase for the first time this season due to suspension, up to sixth place on 24 points while Crusaders continue propping up the standings with just six points after suffering their 18th loss of the campaign.

Last year's encounter between the two teams went down to the wire at Neath and it was a similar story this evening with both sides still in with a chance of clinching the victory heading into the closing stages.

Crusaders, fielding the vast majority of the players suspended for a breach of club discipline prior to last weekend's heavy defeat to Hull KR, looked to have opened the scoring inside six minutes after a Castleford attack near the home line was intercepted and full-back Clinton Schifcofske went sprinting in the opposite direction.

From a couple of play-the-balls, a pass found its way out to wing Stuart Reardon who thought he had scored in the corner only for the try to be disallowed for an infringement.

It was pretty fast and furious in the opening exchanges before Castleford claimed the first score of the game in the 18th minute when interchange Jordan Thompson, who had been on for only six minutes, took a pass five yards out from the home line to power his way over near the posts for a try which Kirk Dixon converted.

But Crusaders hit back soon afterwards when second row Jason Chan, one of the seven banned last week, went over for a try.

Then, just a few minutes later, the hosts were in front when they reached the Tigers' line again for Lloyd White to take the pass, dummy the cover and go over under the posts.

Crusaders really had their tails up and another verdict went to the video ref on 32 minutes when wing Jordan Tansey chipped over the Castleford defence on the left before seeing White gather and go over. However, it was called back for a knock-on

All that effort paid off on 38 minutes when Michael Witt sent a cross-kick on sixth tackle to the left corner, wing Jordan Tansey outjumped defender Stuart Jones and went over to give the Welshmen an eight-point lead at half-time.

An excellent match had some more twists and turns after the break as Castleford fought their way back into it.

Former Crusader Nick Youngquest stole over for an easy try within two minutes of the second half kicking off but was denied another soon after when referee Ben Thaler ruled a pass had gone forward earlier in the move.

At the other end, Jarrod Sammut intercepted a Ryan Hudson pass on halfway and raced unopposed to the line to make Schifcofske's conversion easy.

But interchange forward Ben Dixon brought the Tigers roaring back with a try on 54 minutes and was left then shaking his head in despair when he dropped a simple pass from Hudson with the line at his mercy.

And, as the clock ticked down, both sides looked for the decisive score before Parker's late effort sealed it for Castleford. A Dixon penalty was just icing on the cake.
