Source: http://www.reds.co.ukThe start of the new season of the Stobart Super League is so close now you can almost smell it.
Salford City Reds Head Coach Phil Veivers has named his first 19 Man Squad of the season and includes recent addition hooker, Stuart Howarth in a full-strength line-up for the opening clash against Castleford Tigers at Salford City Stadium on Saturday (6pm).
Stephen Wild takes over as Captain with Luke Patten as vice-captain, freeing up playmaker Daniel Holdsworth to concentrate on getting the Reds around the park.
Wild is excited about the season opener and looking forward to leading out the Reds on a historic night.
"We want to get people excited about the club again and want to get people down here. If we put in a good performance against Cas and hopefully get a win against them on Sky it's only going to help us," he said.
"It's a great honour to captain the side, especially coming into the new stadium. Hopefully it will be the start of something big."
Veivers himself has made o brash promises but will doubtless have his own internal set of targets he would like this side to achieve, and one of them will be to get off to a good start against Ian Millward's men.
Reds 19-Man Squad to face Castleford Tigers: Patten, Broughton, Gleeson, Moon, Williams, Holdsworth, Smith, Jewitt, Godwin, James, Ashurst, McPherson, Wild (c), Nero, Adamson, Anderson, Howarth, Palea'aesina, Gledhill
Please note, the curtain raiser between the Reds U20s and the Tigers U20s due to kick off at 3.45pm has now been postponed.
For tickets visit the Stadium Box Office 9am to 10pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday. You can also book online HERE or over the phone on 0844 888 0200!

Source: www.superleague.co.ukHollywood actor Mickey Rourke watched Gareth Thomas make a winning return to the Millennium Stadium as Crusaders RL clawed back two of the four points they were docked for going into administration with a 42-12 win over Salford City Reds.
Rourke was in Cardiff to watch Thomas in action as he prepares to portray the former British Lions captain in a film, but the Welshman was overshadowed by hat-trick hero Michael Witt as Crusaders made an impressive start to the Engage Super League season.
Thomas had a quiet game despite switching from wing to centre on his eagerly-awaited return to South Wales, but the Crusaders absolutely sparkled to ensure a winning start to Iestyn Harris' career as head coach.
A one-time boxer, Rourke might have also have been impressed by the swinging punch from Salford debutant Wayne Godwin on Crusaders full-back Clinton Schifcofske just before the end which earned the former Bradford hooker a red card.
Godwin's punch sparked a flare-up which marred an otherwise entertaining encounter which turned into something of a disaster for Shaun McRae's new-look Salford side.
Witt, who missed the second half of last season through injury, demonstrated his immense value to the Crusaders through his scoring prowess while former Bradford winger Stuart Reardon marked his debut with a brace of tries.
Even with three players stranded in Australia awaiting visas, the Wrexham club were far too good for a Reds team that began promisingly enough but deteriorated alarmingly in the second half, conceding four converted tries.
On his first Super League appearance since June, Witt quickly made up for lost time by sending 21-year-old debutant winger Rhys Williams over for the game's first try after only two minutes and then dummying his way over for his first on 16 minutes.
In between, Salford's own classy playmaker, Daniel Holdsworth slipped through the Crusaders defence for a try and added the goal, but the Welshmen opened up a 16-6 lead when Reardon grabbed his first try, a somewhat fortuitous score, the ball rebounding into his arms from a tackle on team-mate Tony Martin.
Salford were without suspended props Ray Cashmere and Ryan Boyle and two of their eight new signings, Vinnie Anderson and Phil Bailey, because of injury, and the holes gradually began to appear in their make-up.
Full-back Luke Patten, one of five debutants, opened his account for the Reds, racing onto Matty Smith's perfectly-judged grubber kick on the last tackle, and Holdsworth's second conversion cut the gap to just four points but that was as good as it got for McRae's men.
Schifcofske nudged his side further ahead on the stroke of half-time with a 40-metre penalty and Crusaders, who also gave debuts to ex-Wakefield forwards Paul Johnson and Richard Moore, cut loose in a one-sided second half.
The ever-dangerous Jarrod Sammut, who started on the bench, brought the crowd to life with a weaving run out of his own half while Schifcofske rescued the Crusaders by tracking back to deny Smith after a glorious 50-metre break.
Second rower Jason Chan then showed his strength to force his way over for his side's fourth try on 53 minutes, and five minutes later Witt went through a yawning gap in the Salford defence for his second try.
As Salford crumbled, Witt completed his hat-trick and Reardon grabbed his second, with Schifcofske taking his goal tally to seven from nine attempts.
