Source: www.giantsrl.comHuddersfield Giants are supporting a new programme to encourage their male fans to tackle their unhealthy habits, avoid the penalties of inactivity and high fat, high sugar diets and convert to a fitter, healthier way of life.
'Get fit with the Giants' is a new, free 12 week programme, run by NHS Kirklees with the Giants, which offers activity sessions, healthy eating advice and support to out of condition men over 30 who want to loose weight, get fitter and healthier and into shape for the future.
'Get fit with the Giants' starts on Tuesday 7 February with an introductory session to explain more about the 12 week programme which runs from 6-8pm on Tuesdays at The Zone in Huddersfield until 24 April.
The programme uses some of the ideas of rugby league to encourage men to make changes to their lifestyles to improve their health and fitness. By bringing together a group of men to work as a team to achieve goals, take part in training sessions led by a coach and find out the facts about topics such as weight management and nutrition, the men can support and motivate each other as they lose weight, get fitter and tackle some difficult issues such as stopping smoking.
Dr Judith Hooper, Director of Public Health for Kirklees Council and NHS Kirklees said, "The Giants are fantastic role models. They are at the peak of physical fitness and lead healthy lifestyles so that they can be at the top of their game and perform their best for the team and their fans. By involving the players and using some of the motivational techniques used by the Giants, those taking part in the programme should succeed in making positive changes to improve their health."
Robbie Hunter-Paul, player and the club's new Business Development Manager, is keen to support the initiative. "It's a great idea and the Giants are fully behind the programme. All of us need to be aware of how we live our lives whether we are players, fans or coaches and make sure that the lifestyles we lead will not give us problems with our health.
"It's much easier to make changes to your way of life if you work as a team, train together and encourage each other. Being part of a team makes a massive difference as everyone wants to make sure that they do their best and won't let the team down."
Duncan Henderson, from Slaithwaite, is a dedicated Huddersfield Giants fan who recently lost three stone following a programme of healthy eating and activity. He said, "Having lost the weight I feel so much better than I did before. I would have loved the chance to take part in a programme like 'Get fit with the Giants' as it is the support of others that gives you the motivation to keep going. I'd recommend this opportunity to any man who needs some support to shed some pounds or start a fitness programme."

Source: www.giantsrl.comHuddersfield Giants have appointed Robbie Hunter-Paul as the Club's Business Development Manager. The former Giants player will take up his new full time role today with the remit to expand the Club's supporter and corporate base.
Giants Managing Director Richard Thewlis explained to www.giantsrl.com the role that the former Super League legend can play in the development of the club:
"I believe Robbie's skill set to be unique in Rugby League," he said. "He has always kept in touch with our club and assisted in many areas since he came to play for the Giants in 2006 where of course he scored for us in our first Challenge Cup Final appearance for many years. As a frequent visitor to the Galpharm and a student of the University of Huddersfield (who remain a key partner of the Giants) our paths kept crossing and now his playing days are over we were very keen to explore with him his plans for a career and after talking many times at length we are delighted that he has agreed to come here.
"His remit is very simple in that we want him to grow our business and in order to do that he will interact with a number of our departments here but primarily the marketing and commercial functions. His enthusiasm for the task ahead is fantastic to see and the drive and energy that he puts into everything he does will be of enormous benefit to us."
Robbie Hunter-Paul commented:
"Can I first say how happy I am about becoming a member of the Huddersfield Giants family once again. The opportunity to return to the Giants in a completely new capacity is one that I know will be challenging but also very exciting.
"My time here as a player allowed me to make many amazing friendships with staff, partners and supporters, friendship's that continue to this day.
"I like to think that I can apply many of the skills I have developed as an athlete to this role as well as drawing upon the education received as a sports marketing student with the University of Huddersfield. The fusion of these two diverse resources is something I feel will benefit the club in the long term.
"I can't wait to get started and I am really excited about learning new skills from the current team as well as playing a role developing brand new strategies for moving the Giants forward.
"There are many exciting times ahead and I know I will be tested but hard work never fazed anyone involved in Rugby League. So I guess its role the sleeves up time!"
