Source: www.cowboys.com.auToyota Cowboys hooker Aaron Payne will have the chance to become the third North Queensland player to reach the 200 NRL games mark after signing a new one-year contract with the club today.
The 28-year-old took his career tally to 194 games by playing 23 matches this season and he will move past Paul Bowman into second position for most appearances by a Cowboy if he plays 10 matches in 2012.
A two-time Player of the Year winner with the Cowboys, Payne said staying with North Queensland was always his number one option and both he, and the club, have not ruled out continuing his NRL career past next season.
"I'm really glad that we've come to an agreement," Payne said.
"I'm not getting any younger and signing for one year sits quite comfortably with me.
"The club has indicated that if I'm playing well there's always an option for another year.
"The one-year deal keeps you on your toes.
"I'm just going to rip in next year and see what happens when the time comes."
A junior with the Centrals club in Townsville and a former student of Kirwan High School, not far from Dairy Farmers Stadium, Payne made his NRL debut in round 12 of the 2002 season.
Cowboys General Manger - Football Peter Parr said the hooker had been a great performer for North Queensland on and off the field.
"He's a very good role model for our younger players," Parr said.
"What he provides in education for those players is invaluable.
"He's been part of our leadership group for a long period of time and he's always been what I consider to be a low maintenance player.
"He's always trained exceptionally well and he's always conducted himself around the club, in the community and on the field particularly well.
"He's a player who's respected highly by the playing group."
Payne said there was plenty of improvement in the Cowboys' NRL squad which made the finals this season for the first time since 2007.
Most of the 2011 playing group will be back for next season.
"I think we will be better for this year," he said.
"We definitely made step forwards this year but the way we left the finals series leaves a bitter taste in your mouth."

Source: www.cowboys.com.auThe North Queensland Toyota Cowboys round 9 team has been boosted with the return of Aaron Payne and Luke O'Donnell to the run-on side.
Payne is back from an ankle injury, while Luke O'Donnell and Willie Mason will join the team in Sydney after their duties in the City v Country match this Friday night.
Coach Neil Henry also announced today that NYC captain Michael Morgan will make his NRL debut as halfback, in place of captain Johnathan Thurston who has been sidelined with a shoulder injury.
John Williams is also back in the side after a week out, and Manase Manuokafoa joins Henry's extended bench that includes Clint Amos as 18th man.
