Source: www.cowboys.com.auA new position has been created in the Toyota Cowboys' football department to enhance the NRL club's development of young rugby league talent in North and Central Queensland.
Dean Payne, who had previously been the Cowboys' junior development manager, has taken on the new role as player development manager and will work closely with the young footballers in the NRL club's scholarship program.
Ryan Mahoney, who was North Queensland's first Learn Earn Legend! program co-ordinator, will switch over to the football department to assume Payne's former job under a new title - game development manager.
Toyota Cowboys General Manager - Football Peter Parr said the player development manager position reinforced the club's commitment to identifying the best young footballers from North and Central Queensland and then helping them progress to the Toyota Cup under-20s and NRL competitions.
"Dean will look after all of the elite young players we have in our scholarship program," Parr said.
"It's a role we think is very important for the future of our club and the goal of having an even higher percentage of North Queensland players in our NRL team.
"Our aim is to give our scholarship players even more contact with our club and develop them to NYC standard once they have finished school.
"Primarily Dean's time will be consumed with monthly academy sessions in Cairns, Mackay, Townsville and Rockhampton.
"These sessions have already started and will continue until the end of the season."
Payne, who played his junior football with Centrals in Townsville, was a member of the North Queensland Young Guns' team that won the Queensland Cup before moving into his first off-field role with the club.
Mahoney played his junior football for Brothers in Townsville and went on to play for the Cowboys' inaugural NYC side in 2008 and 2009.
He then worked at Shalom College in Townsville before joining the Cowboys as program coordinator for the Learn Earn Legend! program in the club's community department.
Pam Santo-Appleby has been appointed as the new Learn Earn Legend! program co-ordinator joining Joel Johnston who started with the Cowboys earlier this year.
