Bulldogs Members voted on Sunday to grant Adam Perry Life Membership of the Football Club. Perry played 11 seasons at the Bulldogs and played in 133 first grade games and 230 grade games. Perry received tributes from Clive Gartner, Barry Nelson and Barry Ward for his service to the Bulldogs.
Perry was one of the unfashionable heroes and genuine stalwarts for the Bulldogs, who made the most out of the ability that was given to him to last 11 seasons at the Bulldogs with the last nine of them in first grade. Perry started the Bulldogs Grand Final victory against the Roosters at hooker and was regarded as one of the old style tough and grinding hookers.
Nelson, who was Chairman when Perry first arrived at Canterbury, said that his defence, toughness and attitude set him apart from the others. Nelson said that opponents knew when they were hit by Perry and praised him for his loyalty and commitment.
Long serving stalwart Alan Schwebel was presented with 60 years successive service at Canterbury and is regarded as one of the finest gentleman the club has had. Schwebel first came to Canterbury in 1947 as a player and has been involved every year since as a Player, Coach, Official, Committee Member, Chairman, Director and more recently in the role of Statistician.
Schwebel was meant to receive the award following the 2007 season after receiving a special award in 1996 for 30 successive years as a Director and 49 successive years at Canterbury. Schwebel was very honoured and humble to receive the accolade and continues to be one of the unsung heroes at Canterbury.
Marie Moore was promoted to the position as Joint Patron joining former NSW Premier John Fahey, politicians Leo McLeay and Wes Davoren and Cricket legend Mark Waugh. Mrs Moore was the wife of the late Peter Moore and is the mother of current Bulldogs Coach Kevin Moore.
One of the finest and most knowledgeable people there is the elevation of Mrs Moore to Joint Patron is a special honour and one that the Bulldogs Board must be commended for. It was a special occasion for Mrs Moore with her son being elevated to the top position and she was accompanied to the AGM by her daughter Lynne Anderson, who was the Bulldogs Marketing Manager from 1992-97 and her husbane Chris Anderson, who had a long career at Canterbury as a player and coach.
Bulldogs Coach Kevin Moore and Recruitment Manager Peter Mulholland spoke to the Members about the upcoming season and talked about the way the Bulldogs are heading. Both individuals spoke with complete professionalism.
Moore showed that he's a Coach that cares and will be a Coach that the players will play for. Moore acknowledged his Assistant Coach Jim Dymock, NSW Cup Coach Terry Lamb, NYC Coach Andrew Patmore, Head Conditioner Tony Grimaldi, High Performance Manager Harry Harris, Team Doctor Joe Lombardo, Physiotherapist Tony Ayoub and long serving stalwarts Larry Britton, Gary Carden and Dr Hugh Hazzard. Moore also thanked Anderson for his assistance in bringing several key people across to the Bulldogs.
Moore introduced the NRL recruitments where he gave all the players a nice introduction and spoke about the value they'll bring to the Bulldogs. Moore gave Brett Kimmorley one of the greatest wraps that could be bestowed upon a Bulldogs player when he said that his level of toughness and competitiveness is up there with the Bulldogs greatest player and 70 year captain Terry Lamb.
Mulholland introduced the second tier and NYC recruits and spoke about the extensions to the NYC and Junior Rep squads and the implementation of Development Squads and training structures. Mulholland displayed that he's one smart individual and very switched on at the role he is performing.
The AGM was all smooth sailing except for Clive Gartner in his speech for Perry's Life Membership expressing disappointment at Corey Hughes and to a lesser extent Brent Sherwin not receiving their Life Membership on Sunday. A Life Member from the floor wasn't impressed with what happened to Hughes and occasionally mentioning Sherwin's name where he asked Peponis on numerous occasions if the matter was personal between him and the Hughes family to which Peponis said there is no issue between him and Corey Hughes.
The current Board of Directors have decided not to award active professional players Life Membership until after their full-time professional careers are over with Hughes, Sherwin and Matt Utai all mentioned by Peponis as players who will receive Life Membership once their playing days are over.
The Bulldogs Fan Day on Saturday was a monster success with nearly 1,500 people turning up, well over 100 new Season Tickets purchased and over $20,000 worth of merchandise sold on the day.
One Bulldogs official commented privately to Rleague.com that they are in positive negotiations with one blue chip company and another two blue chip companies have stated they'll come on board in 2010 providing the Bulldogs are out of the press for negative reasons. The challenge for all players, officials and supporters is to set a good example for the Bulldogs and do their bit to avoid the newspapers and other forms of the mainstream media for negative reasons or take advantage of the Bulldogs brand name for personal fame and glory.
The image of the Bulldogs is paramount and the current Board and Management have worked extremely hard to rebuild the Bulldogs image after the previous four years where it has been smashed apart internally and externally.
The Bulldogs have recruited strongly on and off the field for the 2009 season and by recognising Alan Schwebel and Marie Moore they have showed they are a Club that doesn't forget the people who have made them successful and the special Club that they are.

Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes has named Adam Perry and Nick Kouparitsas in the starting side for Friday night's crunch game against Penrith following an ankle injury to Corey Hughes and of course Sonny Bill Williams being banned for two matches.
Hughes is likely to be out of action for the next 6-8 weeks and Perry was the obvious replacement after a solid game in Premier League last week. Perry has trimmed down in the off season and it's the fittest he has been for some time.
Kouparitsas does a direct swap with Williams and played in the semi-final against Canberra last year where he performed admirably. Williams took the two match ban today, but not before comment by Chief Executive Malcolm Noad and Coach Steve Folkes about the processes and officialdom within the NRL ranks.
Noad said,
"Sonny will take an early plea, however, the vision we saw reinforces our view that the tackle should have been graded 'careless' rather than 'reckless'."
"The Club also reaffirms its position that despite the unfortunate outcome the tackle did not warrant a send off, there was no swinging arm, no closed fist and Andrew Johns had been tackled by another player and was dropping. That decision by the referee has now set the precedent for the send off of players for high tackles for the rest of the season.
"The send off also effectively means that Sonny gets a week on top of the grading."Folkes commented on the standard of refereeing in the clash where Tony Archer and Steve Clark collectively put the Bulldogs out of contention in the clash. The long-serving Bulldogs coach who played for Australia in the 1980's said,
"We are disappointed with a number of decisions throughout Sunday's game and will be lodging a formal report with the NRL.
"We understand that referees are human and from time-to-time will make mistakes and because of that we are not in the habit of using referee's decisions as an excuse. However, we believe the officiating on Sunday was below NRL standard and incorrect decisions had a direct result on the outcome of the game."It wasn't the first time that Archer has been savage on the Bulldogs with a clash against Cronulla last year reducing them to 11-men for a 10 minute period.
Friday's clash against Penrith at CUA Stadium shapes up as a very important one even at this early stage for the Bulldogs. They have to shake off the demons of surrendering big leads and get the bogey out of their system if they are to enjoy a successful 2007 season.
Ben Roberts gets another chance at halfback with Brent Sherwin not named in the first grade side whilst Trent Cutler holds onto the wing position with Matt Utai still injured.
