Puletua set to feature in play-offs

St Helens' hopes of making a sixth consecutive Engage Super League Grand Final appearance have been boosted by the availability of in-form ex-New Zealand international Tony Puletua.

It was feared the 32-year-old forward would miss the rest of the season with an rotator cuff injury but he is set to return for the play-offs after scans revealed he does not need shoulder surgery.

"It's great news," said Saints coach Royce Simmons. "TP is an integral part of the team and we're delighted he doesn't need surgery."

St Helens forward Tony Puletua has ended speculation over his future by signing a new two-year contract with his club.

The in-form former New Zealand international, who is in the Exiles squad to face England next month, was out of contract at the end of the season and had been linked with a move to Engage Super League rivals Warrington Wolves.

Now in his third season in England, the 31-year-old former Penrith Panthers forward says he will see out his career with Saints.

"They are the only Super League club that I would consider playing for and I've enjoyed every aspect of my time here so far, particularly the fans who have been absolutely amazing to me," he said.

"With the new stadium near to completion and some new international signings to complement a great crop of young players coming through, the next couple of years are going to be more than exciting for Saints players and fans alike."

The news is a significant boost for Saints, who have signed Gold Coast forward Anthony Laffranchi for next season but will lose England prop James Graham at the end of the year when he moves to Australia.

Coach Royce Simmons said: "This is a great lift for us all. Tony is a rare breed of forward who combines size with athleticism and skill and can play both back and front row.

"He brings an extra dimension to our game and has been in great form of late. He is in prime physical condition and there is no doubt that he can play on at the highest level for another couple of seasons after this."
