Crusaders start shaking up playing squad for 2010
Thu July 9, 2009

Celtic Crusaders have started planning their playing squad for the 2010 season by announcing that two long serving players will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

Full back Tony Duggan, 30, who made his Crusaders debut against Hemel Stags in the Northern Rail Cup in 2006, is out of contract at the end of the year and is expected to continue his Rugby League career in France form next season.

Another player, 28 year old stand-off Damian Quinn, who also made his debut in Crusaders' first ever game against Hemel Stags in 2006 is out of contract at the end of the year and is expected to join Duggan in France.

Leighton Samuel, Celtic Crusaders chairman said: "We are currently looking at shaking up the playing squad for next year as we look to improve both our performances and results. It's fair to say that our playing squad for 2010 will look significantly different to the one that has represented the club in its inaugural Super League season and the planning for next year starts right now.

"I'd like to put on record my thanks to both Tony and Damian who have been with Crusaders since 2006 when the club played its first ever game against Hemel Stags. It was only right and proper that players who helped this club reach the top flight were rewarded with the opportunity to play in Super League.

"Tony and Damian won't be the only two players to leave between now and the start of next season as we need to free up space in the squad so that we can add more players with Super League experience to our playing roster."

In addition to planning its playing squad for 2010, Celtic Crusaders are also weighing up their options about where they will play next year.

Leighton Samuel added: "We're currently considering a move away from the Brewery Field and Bridgend until our new ground is built. We play the champions Leeds Rhinos in late August in Newport, and who knows, if that is a success we might make that move semi-permanent at least until our new home is ready."

Quinn to reach 100 appearances for Crusaders on Sunday

Damien Quinn will become the first player reach 100 competitive appearances for Celtic Crusaders when he runs out against Wigan Warriors at the JJB Stadium on Sunday (kick-off 3pm).

This is a magnificent achievement for the Welsh-qualified half-back / loose forward who has only missed five games since he played in the Crusaders' very first outing at Hemel Stags on a wet afternoon in Hertfordshire on February 12th 2006.

"I have probably got John Dixon to thank for my 100 appearances for playing me in every Northern Rail Cup tie we ever had," Quinn said. "It will be nice to achieve and something that I probably won't really realise the magnitude of until after I reach it. I would love to have 100 tries like Duggo (Tony Duggan) though."

Quinn was one of the first players to put pen to paper to sign for the Crusaders. Working as a teacher in Australia at the time and playing part-time for Queensland Cup side Toowoomba Clydesdales, it was a big risk for him to travel halfway round the world to turn out for a team that hadn't even played a game yet. So what influenced his decision to come to Celtic Crusaders in the first place?

"This was a real chance to do something different by playing footy in a whole other country," he said. "The idea of Super League was a real carrot but seemed a long way off at the time. The on and off field staff was a definite factor too. I knew John and Anthony Seibold from my days at Toowoomba and I was happy to give it a go."

Now, three years after running out on a virtual park pitch with no stands at Hemel Hempstead, Quinn will be celebrating a milestone at arguably the most famous rugby club in the world.

"To go from Hemel to Wigan in three years is quite an accomplishment," Quinn said. "We've certainly gone a long way. Just over three years ago I was teaching some of the boys how to play the ball properly in the sleet at Llandarcy and thinking 'What am I doing here?'. Now we're running out at one of the best stadiums in the country. I hope it will be a day to remember, it would be good to get our first win up there."
