In Touch: Saints aim to equal club record run at Wembley
Thu August 28, 2008
by Raymond Fletcher
ST HELENS will equal the club record of 21 successive Cup and League wins if they defeat Hull in the Carnegie Challenge Cup Final at Wembley on Saturday.

The record was set from the start of the 1964-65 season when they went from 22 August until 9 January winning every match. The run consisted of 17 League matches in the old one division system and four Lancashire Cup-ties. The run ended with a 6-4 League defeat at Warrington.

This year, the Saints' 20 successive victories consist of 16 engage Super League matches and four Carnegie Challenge Cup-ties. It is the best run of victories by any Super League club in the summer era. Francis Meli and Bryn Hargreaves are the only players to have played in all 20 matches.

St. Helens's last defeat was 30-24 at Castleford Tigers on 6 April.

The longest winning run of all time is 29 by Wigan in 1987 and Huddersfield in 2002. Wigan were in the top division and Huddersfield in the second.

HOLROYD EQUALS CLUB RECORD
GRAHAM HOLROYD of Halifax equalled the club goals in a season record of 147* with eight in the 64-44 Co-operative National League One win at Featherstone Rovers. He shares the record with Tysul Griffiths, who kicked 147 in 1955-56, playing in 44 matches. Holroyd equalled the record in his 25th match.

* Does not include one in the friendly match against Melbourne Storm, arranged as a warm up game before the Australian club played in the World Club Challenge early in the season.

AINSCOUGH NEARS RECORD
MARTIN AINSCOUGH of Rochdale Hornets needs four tries to equal the club record for a season set by winger Marlon Billy with 31 in 2000-01, playing in 33 matches. Ainscough has scored 27 tries in 31 matches. This is the stand off's first season with Rochdale after signing from Leigh Centurions.

GALE SET FOR NEW RECORD
LUKE GALE of Doncaster is poised to set a new club record for tries in a season. The half back has equalled the record of 26 tries, having played in all 31 matches. He shares the record with Craig Weston (1999-00 in 33 matches) and Jason Lee (2001-02 in 36 matches).

WINNING RUNS
GATESHEAD THUNDER have won six successive matches, all in Co-operative National League Two. Their last defeat was 32-24 at Keighley Cougars on 13 July.

LOSING RUNS
HUNSLET HAWKS have lost six successive matches, all in Co-operative National League Two. Their last win was 15-10 at home to Barrow Raiders on 6 July.

POINT SCORING RUN
THOMAS BOSC of Catalans Dragons and CHRIS HICKS of Warrington Wolves have scored in each of their club's 28 Cup and Super League matches this season. The feat of scoring in all matches for a club throughout a season has been achieved 28 times.

But only two players have scored in every round of a Super League season since its launch in 1996. They are Andrew Farrell for Wigan Warriors in 1998 and 2001 plus Kevin Sinfield for Leeds Rhinos last season.

Hicks's scoring run began with his debut for Warrington at the start of this season. The Australian's scoring sequence is unusual in that he scored tries in the first seven matches before taking over the goal kicking and adding goals in every match since.

CARL FORBER of Workington Town has also scored in all 30 matches for his club this season.

TRY SCORING RUN
STEFAN RATCHFORD of Salford City Reds has scored tries in seven successive matches as follows: 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1.

LUKE DORN of Castleford Tigers has scored tries in five successive matches as follows: 3 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1.

MILESTONES
LEE GREENWOOD of Halifax needs two tries for a career century of touchdowns with five clubs plus two appearances for England. His 98 tries consist of 45 for Halifax, 23 London Broncos, 3 Huddersfield Giants, 25 Leigh Centurions and 2 England. He also played twice for Sheffield Eagles without scoring.

JAMIE ROONEY of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats needs 26 points for a career total of 1,000 for the club. The stand off's 974 points consist of 66 tries and 366 goals, including 22 drop goals.
