Source: www.rabbitohs.com.auSouths have recorded another golden point victory, this time against the Dragons at WIN Jubilee Oval, with halfback Adam Reynolds proving to be the field goal-kicking hero, handing the Rabbitohs a 19-18 win in front of 14,894.
Reynolds' 82nd minute field goal gave the Rabbitohs their second golden point victory for 2012 and their sixth win for the season.
With winger Justin Hunt on debut and missing State of Origin representative players Greg Inglis and Dave Taylor, the Rabbitohs started slowly with the Dragons getting out to a 12-nil lead after 17 minutes through tries to Jason Nightingale and Jamie Soward.
Rabbitohs captain Sam Burgess stepped up to the plate to turn his side's fortunes around, becoming a one-man wrecking ball in defence, followed by a 30th minute try which saw him crash over under the posts after charging onto a cut-out pass from hooker Issac Luke. Reynolds converted the try to reduce the deficit to six points.
The Rabbitohs maintained the pressure on the Dragons, with fullback Nathan Merritt being denied a try by the video referee in the 36th minute after he was held up over the line.
The Rabbitohs had not finished their attacking raids for the half, with Reynolds scoring his first four-pointer in the NRL in the final minute of the stanza. Five-eighth John Sutton put up a bomb which was spilt by Dragons winger Daniel Vidot. Rabbitohs centre Matt King was quick to snap up the loose ball and pass to Reynolds who scooted 20 metres to score. He converted his own try to level the scores at the break.
The two sides then went into a war of attrition after the break, belting each other with everything they had, trying to force mistakes and gain the advantage.
The Dragons were the first ones to score when veteran centre Matt Cooper took a sneaky blind side scoot to score in the corner. Soward's conversion restored the home side's six-point lead.
From the Rabbitohs next set of possession a perfect grubber, chase and tackle from Reynolds pinned the Dragons in goal, giving the Rabbitohs a repeat set and at the same time mounted more pressure on the Dragons' defence.
From the next set, it was Reynolds who was involved again, putting in the grubber that saw rookie winger Andrew Everingham fly through and beat two defenders to the ball to score a crucial try, and Reynolds' calm conversion locked the scores up at 18-all with plenty of time left on the clock.
Soward had an opportunity to steal the lead back with a penalty goal in the 67th minute but he missed the shot, keeping the Rabbitohs' hopes alive.
Two minutes later debutant Justin Hunt was denied a try by the video referee after his boot just touched the sideline before grounding the ball after a desperate tackle from Soward.
Field goal attempts by Soward (72nd and 77th minutes), Reynolds (73rd and 76th minutes) and Ben Hornby (80th minute) all missed, taking the game into golden point extra time.
The Rabbitohs kicked off and an excellent set in defence gave South Sydney the ball in quality field position. The men in cardinal and myrtle worked the ball up the middle of the field, putting them in good position to attempt their third shot at field goal.
Sutton went into dummy half and fired the pass back to Reynolds who calmly potted the field goal, giving the Rabbitohs the 19-18 victory.
Reynolds was the hero but the work done by the forward pack set up the victory. It was an excellent team performance, showing great character to come from behind to get the two competition points.
The Rabbitohs now look forward to Friday night's clash with the Canberra Raiders at ANZ Stadium, with kick off scheduled for 7:35pm.
South Sydney Rabbitohs 19 (Sam Burgess, Adam Reynolds, Andrew Everingham tries; Adam Reynolds 3 goals; Adam Reynolds field goal)

Source: www.rabbitohs.com.auThe South Sydney Rabbitohs have extended the contracts of eight young stars of the Club from the NRL, Toyota Cup and junior representative ranks this week.
NRL rookie David Tyrrell heads the list of up-and-coming talent to show their allegiance to the South Sydney Club, extending his contract until the end of the 2011 season.
Joining him at the Club at least until the conclusion of 2011 are under 20s halfback Adam Reynolds, centre Dylan Farrell and winger Kane Morgan, as well as Harold Matthews star James Roberts. Also committing to the Club for the 2010 season are NRL rake Beau Falloon, Toyota Cup prop Jacob Nansen and Harold Matthews centre Tyrone Ranuku-Phillips.
"We're very pleased to have secured the services of these bright young players for the coming seasons," Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson said.
"Players such as Dave Tyrrell and Beau Falloon have shown they can play at the top level, and both players will only continue to improve as they get more opportunities in the top grade.
"Reynolds, Morgan, Farrell and Nansen are some of strongest performers in the Toyota Cup and will push for first grade selection in the not-too-distant future.
"Roberts and Ranuku-Phillips have been stand-outs all year in our junior rep teams and to have them contracted to the Rabbitohs is a sign that our young stars see a pathway to the top with the Rabbitohs.
"Our Recruitment Manager Mark Hughes and the team at Souths Juniors have done a great job in producing these players and attracting them to our Club. These are the players of the future for the Rabbitohs and our Members and supporters will get to watch them develop their game in the South Sydney jersey.
"It's exciting for us to be able to extend the contracts of these players and to build our teams around young players such as these guys."
Tyrrell, 20, made his NRL debut a fortnight ago in the Club's victory against the Penrith Panthers, having played in the Club's Toyota Cup side throughout 2008 and the North Sydney Bears in the NSW Cup in the first half of 2009. Tyrrell's talents have been on the radar of the Rabbitohs for a number of seasons since he joined the Brisbane Easts Tigers in 2007 on a Rabbitohs contract.
Falloon, 22, made his first grade debut in the red and green in 2008, having now played 19 NRL games over the past two seasons. Falloon came through the grades at the Rabbitohs, graduating from the Mascot Jets to the Rabbitohs full time squad.
Reynolds, 19, has also progressed through the junior representative sides to represent South Sydney at the Toyota Cup level. Reynolds received his first taste of NRL-level competition when he played in the Return to Redfern trial match against the Wests Tigers in February. Reynolds has represented NSW under 17s and NSW Schoolboys and won the Peter Sterling Medal in 2007. Reynolds is a Kensington United South Sydney junior.
Morgan, 19, has been one of the stars of the Toyota Cup competition, currently leading the try scoring tally for the 2009 season. Morgan is a South Sydney junior coming through the grades from the Maroubra Lions.
Farrell, 18, represented NSW under 18s in the curtain raiser to the second State of Origin match this year, having been part of the Rabbitohs Toyota Cup side for the past two seasons.
Nansen, 19, has been the forward leader of the Rabbitohs' under 20s pack in season 2009. Nansen is another South Sydney junior originating from the Kensington Club.
James Roberts, 16, was one of the star performers in the South Sydney Harold Matthews Cup team this year as a goal kicking fullback, earning the custodian's jersey in the NSW under 16s side that played the curtain raiser to the first State of Origin match this year. Roberts is a South Sydney junior from the La Perouse Club.
Tyrone Ranuku-Phillips, 15, was one of the leading lights in the Harold Matthews side this season, scoring seven tries in ten games for South Sydney. The centre/fullback was judged player of the carnival at this year's NSW CHS under 15s Schoolboys tournament. Ranuku-Phillips is also a South Sydney junior from the Mascot Jets.
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have one of the richest histories in Rugby League. Established in 1908, the South Sydney Club has won 20 first grade premierships and provided 62 internationals for the Australian side, and have famously worn their cardinal red and myrtle green colours since inception. The rebirth of the Rabbitohs began on 7 June, 2006 through a new partnership between Russell Crowe, Peter Holmes a Court and the then 8000 Members of the Club. The Rabbitohs made the semi-finals for the first time in 18 years in 2007, and have strengthened their Ticketed Membership to over 8,500 with over 15,000 Total Members in 2009.
