Simmons in awe of ruthless Wigan
Wed September 28, 2011
St Helens coach Royce Simmons knows his side could have their work cut out against Wigan Warriors on Saturday after watching the defending Engage Super League champions roar back to form with a 44-0 rout of Catalan Dragons.

The Warriors bounced back in impression fashion from their opening 26-18 home play-off defeat by Saints to book their place in the last four and earn a re-match with their arch rivals for a place in the Grand Final.

Wigan ran in seven tries without reply, much to the admiration of Simmons, who was at the DW Stadium for the post-match Clubcall press conference.

"Their defence was outstanding," he said. "They were very aggressive and, to hold a great attacking side to zero, they were very good."

The arch rivals were handed a sixth meeting of 2011 in the second qualifying semi-final after Warrington Wolves chose Leeds Rhinos as their Friday night opponents under the Clubcall system.

After finishing fifth at the end of the regular season, the Rhinos were always favourite - as the lowest-ranked side - to be the Wolves' pick.

Meanwhile, Wigan coach Michael Maguire paid tribute to goalkicking winger Pat Richards after he became only the fourth player in the club's history to score 2,000 points.

The 2010 Super League Man of Steel kicked eight goals from nine attempts in the Warriors' win to register the nine points he needed to join Andy Farrell, Jim Sullivan and Frano Botica in reaching the magical milestone.

"It's a great effort," Maguire said. "He was struggling before the game with a minor bump on his calf but he came through really well and it was good to see him get some points on the back end of it."

Richards and Tomkins rip Hull KR apart

Pat Richards and Sam Tomkins each scored a hat-trick as Wigan Warriors enjoyed a resounding victory over Hull KR.

Warrington Wolves and Huddersfield Giants won earlier in Round 15 to go clear at the top of the table, but Wigan's sixth straight Engage Super League win ? and eighth in all competitions ? took the Warriors level on 22 points with a game in hand.

The defending champions played some stunning stuff to claim a seven-try victory but only after they had to defend resolutely at times.

Wigan started strongly with converted tries by Tomkins and Richards making it 12-0 after 10 minutes.

Kris Welham brought the visitors back into it with his 15th try of the season but Richards made it 16-6 at the interval with a try given by the video referee.

Tomkins' scored a superb second-half double to seal victory before Richards also claimed a hat-trick try, the free-scoring winger finishing with a 24-point haul.

George Carmont then scored the hosts' final try at the death, which was harsh on Rovers, who remain three points adrift of the play-off places.

The Robins were unchanged from last week's Challenge Cup win at Salford City Reds while Wigan made three changes following their cup win at Bradford Bulls.

Carmont, Paul Deacon and Harrison Hansen came into the starting line-up, with Thomas Leuluai switching from scrum-half to hooker.

Tomkins suffered concussion at Bradford but was able to remain at full-back and he soon made his mark, scoring from Wigan's opening set in the second minute.

Deacon and stand-off Brett Finch combined to find the England international on halfway, Jake Webster missed the tackle as Tomkins burst down the left and he dummied wide before finishing off a fine try.

Richards added the extras and although Ryan Hoffman knocked on from the restart, Shaun Briscoe's pass wide was behind Peter Fox, stopping Rovers from hitting back quickly.

Ben Galea then forced Finch to cough up possession in front of the Rovers posts but Finch and Carmont then combined following a Lee Mossop drive to send Richards over in the left corner, the Wigan winger converting the kick.

The hosts threatened a third try as Finch was stopped short before Richards was held up and Welham took Finch's high kick.

Rovers then enjoyed their best spell yet thanks partly to three penalties, while Josh Charnley tapped Blake Green's grubber out for a goal-line drop-out, and Briscoe failed to take in Michael Dobson's short ball as the Wigan defence saw off a fourth straight set.

Rovers would breach the Wigan line in the 36th minute, though, as Green kicked behind Charnley for Cockayne, who passed back inside for Welham to finish off a well-worked try.

Briscoe's slip allowed the restart to go behind for a drop-out and while Rovers survived, they left themselves exposed as half-time loomed.

Tomkins put a grubber in behind Fox seconds after the hooter sounded for Richards to touch down, although the try was only given after lengthy deliberation by video referee Ben Thaler.

There was an error-strewn start to the second half, with the visitors having the better possession, before a rare Tomkins fumble resulted in a goal-line drop-out.

Solid defence saw Wigan force a knock-on and they got back on the front foot after Charnley's break from deep, which forced a penalty.

Tomkins then took Finch's pass on the left to step inside at least two defenders to score under the posts in the 59th minute.

Joel Tomkins then set Charnley off down the right before Sam Tomkins charged onto Leuluai's pass to dance over the Rovers line again in the 69th minute.

Paul Prescott's loose pass spurned a certain try but Carmont then charged upfield after taking Green's bomb and laid off for Richards to claim his treble before Joel Tomkins sent Carmont over.
