Rooney replaces Grothe in City side, El Masri in doubt
Mon May 8, 2006
by Matthew O'Neill
Penrith winger Luke Rooney has won a representative recall replacing Eric Grothe Jnr after he advised City selectors he would be unavailable due to a groin injury.

Rooney was a member of the Australian side in 2003-04 but has struggled for form this year with Grothe and Hazem El Masri gaining the jump on Rooney for City Origin spots.

El Masri is in serious doubt with a hamstring injury and is unlikely to play with Cronulla fullback David Simmons being placed on standby. El Masri sustained the injury during the Bulldogs impressive 30-14 victory against arch-rivals the Sydney Roosters.

Country only have one injury concern with reserve forward Clint Newton in doubt with an eye injury. He has been sent for more scans before officials will rule him fit to play. No official replacement has been placed on standby but Canberra's Alan Tongue was extremely unlucky to miss selection. Country hooker Luke Priddis was officially cleared to play after overcoming a corked thigh sustained in the Panthers 22-6 loss against North Queensland on the weekend.

Friday's Country vs City clash will be played at Apex Oval in Dubbo with the captains of the respective sides being 2004 premiership-winning captain Andrew Ryan for Country and 2003 premiership-winning captain Craig Gower for City.
