Ryles storms into Melbourne
Sun October 30, 2011
Source: www.melbournestorm.com.au

Melbourne Storm has continued their recent success in recruiting experienced front rowers by signing former Australian and Roosters prop Jason Ryles to a one year deal.

Ryles, 32, will add another dimension to Craig Bellamay's squad of seasoned players mixed with an exciting group of emerging young talent and developing NYC players.

General Manager Football Operations Frank Ponissi confirmed the deal was completed after being pleasantly surprised by Ryles availability recently.

"We were looking for an experienced front rower to complete our front row roster and when we heard Jason was available we moved quickly to secure his signature," Ponissi said.

"Melbourne Storm has a strong record of signing experienced front rowers to play alongside a number of specifically earmarked development players, to create a well balanced playing list.

"Next year we have six NYC players joining the fulltime squad, along with several players heading into their second and third year of NRL, therefore we firmly believe this experience is vital for the overall balance of the list.

"The most important factor with Jason was his desire to play with Melbourne Storm and our key staff has been extremely impressed with his attitude. We know he is proven club contributor both on and off the field, fitting perfectly into our current recruitment policy."

Ryles confirmed the announcement and the background of the discussions, which led him to Melbourne to embark on another exciting challenge in his distinguished career.

"Melbourne offers another wonderful opportunity and I'm excited about the chance to work with a number of influential people via a proven system," Ryles said.

"Having been coached by Craig Bellamy at representative level over a number of years, I have always wanted to be coached by him at club level. That was a big factor in my decision and I'm really looking forward to the challenge."

Ryles will join the Melbourne Storm in mid November for off season training and club commitments.

Jason Ryles Interview

Coming in to his 200th NRL match we speak exclusively to Jason Ryles about his career, the Roosters and who you don't want to go to lunch with.

You have played in some big matches in your career what is the one that stands out across the past 199?

Last week was definitely in the top 5 because there was so much emotion behind the win and the boys were just really determined to stand up and do well so it was very special to be a part of. Apart from last week I really enjoyed the win over the Titans last year to send us through to the decider. It has been great playing in these matches as a senior player; it is something I am really cherishing.

Best player you have ever played with?

Joey Johns is the stand out. He was great at absolutely everything on the field and everything just felt different when he was on the field.

How different a player are you to the young man that debuted with the Dragons in 2000?

I think I have developed a lot, just like in anything you learn things as you go and I am much more mature on and off the field now so hopefully that shows when I'm out there.

Now, a lot of people are extra careful with their money at the moment due to the current financial state the world is in. Which players throughout your career have been ahead of the pack and are famous for being 'tight' with their money?

Well I can tell you the biggest tight arse has been Trent Barrett. He use to cap himself at $200 a week and once he spent that he had no hesitation asking all the boys to shout him lunch or a drink it was terrible.

I spent a Kangaroo tour with Brent Tate and it was nearly impossible for him to part with his cash.

Also I haven't seen proof of this myself but I am very well informed our very own Jared Waerea-Hargreaves can be very tight so I will have to watch out for him!

How was your experience playing overseas?

Going over to France and England was great because it was really what I needed at the time. It was a great refresher at the time and really helped me love playing footy again. Hardly anyone over there knew about the NRL so it was great and really put everything in to perspective for me. Here in Sydney the NRL is everywhere but over there it was nothing so really gave me a broader view of things.

Describe your time at the Chooks.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here at the club. It's probably something I wasn't expecting but I am so grateful that it has happened. We had such great success last year and even though this year has been difficult I have probably learnt just as much in the last 2 years as I did the first 9 years of my playing career, so I have loved my time here.

How have you found the Roosters compared to other clubs?

It is great I love it here. I think the biggest difference is the feeling around the club. Everyone just seems to get along and there is a great family culture here and I am glad to be a part of it.

Are you excited to go around again next year?

I definitely am. It will probably be my final season so I'm just really looking forward to enjoying the ride and I'm particularly excited to witness the development of the junior talent in the club. Smithy has developed a number of the young players from the ground up over the past 12-18 months and I just can't wait to see how they go. There is a handful of players in our 20's who I have no doubt will go on to long and successful NRL careers so next year will be great.

It has been a while between drinks but you finally scored your first try for the club last weekend. You seemed pretty happy about your effort and so you should be but what was that T sign after you scored?

It was great to finally cross the line! I will tell you what someone told me I was paying $61 to score the first try! Ridiculous!

My sponsor Time Frame Group has been geeing me up to do a T sign all year if I scored and I remembered as soon as I crossed the line. I felt a bit stupid but when the camera was in my face down the field I just had to do it. Unfortunately though the boys have given me the 'Goose of the Week' award for it and I will be sporting some tight pink gear at training this week as a result.

How do you think we will go this Saturday night against the Sharks?

We have plenty to build on from last week and there is a massive wave of confidence through the club so if we stick to what we did last week we will be well on the way to winning.
