Thu August 23, 2007 Source: www.souths.com.auRabbitohs backrower Dean Widders is free to play in Sunday's blockbuster against the Wests Tigers after being found not guilty of contrary conduct at the NRL judiciary last night. Widders was charged with grade two contrary conduct ? unnecessary head/neck/contact/pressure following a tackle in the 41st minute of the Rabbitohs dramatic 24-18 win over the Sea Eagles on Monday night. After a hearing that lasted over an hour at NRL headquarters at Moore Park the three-man panel of Don McKinnon, Bob Lindner and Royce Ayliffe took 30 minutes to consider the case before they delivered the not guilty verdict. Widders said he was delighted with the result. "I'm glad it's all over, it's good news and I'm very relieved," he said. "I got a fair hearing and and I'm really looking forward to playing the Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday in what is sure to be a great game."Rabbitohs chief executive Shane Richardson praised the work of Widders's barrister Geoff Bellew. "Geoff did a great job in Dean's defence and I want to thank him for that," Richardson said. In other judiciary news Tigers utility Liam Fulton will take his place in the Wests side on Sunday at Leichhardt Oval. Fulton was found not guilty of a grade one contrary conduct charge. While St George Illawarra prop Jason Ryles was found guilty of a grade one contrary conduct charge and was suspended for two matches. The local juniors were keen to continue their career with the Dragons, Hornby, 27, a product of the Corrimal Cougars and Ryles, 28, from Berkely Wests and are pleased to have their contract negotiations completed Hornby said, "I have always wanted to be a one Club player and am excited to finally know that I will be staying here at the Dragons for the at least the next three years. This is a great Club that has always been great to me and it is a relief to know where I am up to for the next three years.
Ryles said, "I'm very pleased to have my contract sorted and excited to be staying with the Dragons. Contract negotiations are always complex and it has taken a bit longer than I would have liked but I am very pleased with the outcome."
The Co-Captains agree that while other offers may have been financially tempting, there is much more than money involved when making such decisions.
Hornby added, "Our Club has great direction and a great culture. It is something of which I very much want to remain a part.
Ryles continued on and said, "I have some great friends here and we have a very talented and enthusiastic group of young players who just keep getting better each week. Although we might seem to be doing it a bit tough at the moment, I'm very confident in what the future will be like here at the Dragons."
Dragons Chief Executive Officer Peter Doust said he too was pleased to finalise the contracts of these current leaders.
Doust said, "Ben and Jason are both outstanding players who contribute significantly to our Club and on and off the field. Contract negotiations are always complex and I am very pleased that we have reached an agreement with both players who will continue to play such an important role in our Club moving forward."
Dragons Coach Nathan Brown was equally as excited to resign two of his Co-Captains to three years terms.
Brown said, "Benny and Rylses are terrific players and great Clubmen. Both are great role models who will continue to lead our Club, in particular our young up and coming players."
