Source: www.cowboys.com.auToyota Cowboys co-captains Johnathan Thurston and Matthew Scott have been named to make their return from injury in the NRL round 23 blockbuster against Brisbane at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Friday night.
Thurston hasn't played a game for the Cowboys since the round 16 loss to the Penrith Panthers, while Scott missed last weekend's loss to Canterbury at ANZ Stadium.
The halfback suffered a grade two medial ligament tear and severe bone bruising playing for Queensland in the deciding State of Origin match on 6 July, and has been undergoing an extensive rehabilitation program over the past five weeks.
Specialist Dr John Maguire has cleared Thurston to return against the Broncos, although he still has to get through team training on Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning.
"The knee is going really well," Thurston said today.
"I did a session yesterday with a fair bit of contact in it and it all came through sweet.
"Now we've just got to get through today's training and see how it goes after that."
Thurston said that while his obvious preference would have been not to miss the past five weeks, he had accepted that injuries were part of the game and was happy his recovery period had ended well before the finals series.
The Cowboys start round 23 in fourth position, two points behind Brisbane, and one ahead of St George Illawarra.
"It just wasn't the case that I could play and now I'm just looking forward to this weekend," Thurston said.
"It's going to be a massive night - a local derby and Locky's 350th.
"Everyone's looking forward to it. I know the fans are, both clubs are and I am as well.
"Hopefully we can spoil Locky's party by scoring a win."
Scott's troublesome back, which has forced him out of two matches in the past month, has improved following treatment late last week.
Winger Kalifa Faifai Loa has also been selected by coach Neil Henry after his hamstring injury ended his run of 17 straight matches in his first season with the Cowboys.
With the injured trio back, Will Tupou and Ben Jones have been omitted from the Cowboys squad and will play for the Mackay Cutters against the Northern Pride in the InTrust Super Cup this weekend.
Coach Neil Henry has named five forwards on his interchange bench and will announce his final 17 an hour before kick off.
General admission tickets and limited grandstand seating for Friday night's game is still available through Ticketek.

Source: www.cowboys.com.auThe North Queensland Toyota Cowboys will be led by co-captains Johnathan Thurston and Matthew Scott for season 2011.
The new approach, introduced by coach Neil Henry, will see Thurston take on a senior role in the partnership.
It will also see Scott promoted in recognition of his outstanding on and off-field development.
Coaching staff will be counting on Thurston to draw upon his extensive depth of experience to help guide the team, which is highly valued by the club after his years at the helm.
Coach Neil Henry says his decision reflects the club's new approach to leadership, and will allow both players to share the off-field responsibilities while enabling them to concentrate fully on their on-field performance.
"I am very happy with the calibre of the candidates in our leadership group and in the end I felt it was appropriate to name two captains, both of whom are outstanding members of the team.
"I really think that Johnathan and Matthew can learn a lot from each other and our team and our club can only benefit from that."
Thurston says he's looking forward to working with Scott as they face the challenges to come in 2011.
"Working alongside Scotty will really relieve some of the pressure that comes with captaining an NRL side and it allows us both to really focus on our efforts on the field," Thurston said.
"I think I speak for the whole team when I say that he is one of the most respected boys in the squad ? he's really grown in confidence and stature as a player and I know I'm looking forward to hitting the field with him this year."
Coming off the back of a stellar year on the field, Thurston's new co-captain reciprocated that feeling.
"I think this co-captaincy has given us a goal in that we both know what our job is and we're both good at different things, but I think together we can lead the team and get the club moving in the right direction," Scott said.
"I've been in the leadership group for a couple of years now, I've been working with the other senior players to set a bit of an example and it's paid off.
"This is the only club I've been at and it's a real honour to be offered the co-captaincy."
