Hardest decision of my life - Scruton
Fri September 5, 2008
by Matthew O'Neill

Leeds Rhinos prop Nick Scruton, 23, has admitted that the decision to join local rivals Bradford Bulls on a three year contract starting from next season was the hardest of his life.

The England international was out of contract at the end of the current season and he has decided to call an end to his career at Headingley Carnegie, which started as a 16 year old.

The former Churwell Chiefs amateur will finish the season with the Rhinos and hopes to help his side to a repeat of last season's Grand Final success at Old Trafford. He commented, "I have been having sleepless nights trying to come up with the right decision. It is something I have thought long and hard about and spoke to my family about. We were talking with Leeds for a long time to try and come up with a deal but at the end of the day I have to sign the right deal for me. I am looking forward to the new challenge at Bradford next year but that will be then and I am now fully concentrated on now and helping the Rhinos to another Grand Final.

"I would like to say a massive thank you to Brian McClennan who has been a real shoulder to cry on when my head has been in bits. He has helped me weigh up my options and allowed me to concentrate on playing each week. I love Leeds Rhinos and I have got lifelong friends at Leeds. I will be giving everything to try and retain that Grand Final and go out on a high," added the prop.

Chief Executive Gary Hetherington admitted the loss of Scruton, who has made 72 appearances for Leeds since making his debut in 2002, was an inevitable part of the salary cap process. He commented, "It is always disappointing to lose someone we wished to keep and especially Nick; a local lad who has come through our Academy.

"But we are now in an age of freedom of contract and players choice. We have evolved a pay structure at the Rhinos which everyone understands and recognises but it is inevitable from time to time we will miss out. I know it has been a difficult decision for Nick and in the recent past players like Mark Calderwood, Chev Walker and Richard Mathers were in a similar position. We understand that and Nick, like those before him, will leave with our best wishes," added Hetherington.

Bradford sign Scruton from Leeds

Bradford Bulls today confirmed the signing of England International Prop Forward Nick Scruton from Leeds Rhinos on a three year contract from the start of next season.

Scruton, who is 23 years old, has made 96 appearances for the Rhinos, including 25 this season and Bulls Coach Steve McNamara is delighted to have Scruton on board for the next three years.

"Nick has been playing in a very strong Leeds side for the last three or four years and he has gone very well. I'm really pleased to able to bring him to the Bulls and also by the fact that he wanted to come here to Bradford as well.

"Nick's young, English and has got a great deal of ambition whilst he still has plenty of improvement in him. He is tough and fit and a very vocal player who he will add a lot to our pack next year and I'm looking forward to working with him.

"He's someone who bases his game on his sheer love and enthusiasm for the sport and he is a great addition to our squad."
