Chris Melling has today agreed to a new two-year deal with Harlequins Rugby League, midway through his first season at the Twickenham Stoop.

The 22-year old was awarded Academy Player of the Year at Wigan in 2006 and has been one of Quins' most consistent performers in his first full season of Super League.

Coach Brian McDermott rates Melling highly: "He works very hard in preparing himself to the highest standards. He puts in, on and off the field, and he is always keen to listen and learn.

"I think he should be proud of how quickly he has adjusted to Super League and of course to his new home here in London.

"If he continues the way he has started life at Quins, he will have a very promising future."

Chris, who alongside Danny Orr will come up against his former club this Saturday, is over the moon with his new deal: "I'm delighted to extend my stay and I'm also really pleased to prove that I can handle what Super League has to offer. I've settled well at Quins and I can see myself improving as a player each and every week.

"I am really looking forward to the rest of this season and of course to Saturday's game. As a team we still have a lot to achieve.

"This (new contract) gives me a feeling of security and stability here in London and I think that will help my own development as a player."

Meanwhile, Rikki Sheriffe has returned to Harlequins for the remainder of the season following the financial restructuring at his former club, Doncaster Lakers. Rikki has joined Joe Mbu in heading back to Quins from Doncaster.

Squad numbers for players not in the original squad at the start of the season are as follows: Joe Walsh (26), Luke Burgess (27), Rikki Sheriffe (28) and Joe Mbu (29).

Having been on the road for one month, Quins are expecting are good crowd for Saturday's game. Club spokesman Chris Warren commented: "We've had a good lead-in time to promote this game and Quins fans are obviously champing at the bit to see their team back at home.

"Wigan always travel in good numbers for this event, and with the Guinness Premiership now over, we should see an increased level of support from Quins' union fraternity as well.

"On top of that, our Community team has been very active promoting this game and it should all add up to a great day out."

Harlequins RL v Wigan Warriors, 3pm Saturday 2nd June, Twickenham Stoop.
