Source: www.superleague.co.ukCatalans Dragons have completed a surprise swoop for Castleford Tigers' Australian scrum-half Brent Sherwin.
The 32-year-old has joined the injury-hit Dragons to the end of the season and is likely to make his debut for them in Saturday's home game against Salford City Reds.
The Perpignan club, currently languishing at the foot of the Engage Super League, turned to the former Canterbury Bulldogs half-back after failing to secure the short-term signature of Melbourne Storm half-back Brent Finch.
The Dragons have been searching for a playmaker since Adam Mogg returned to Australia in March and had even contemplated bringing Shane Perry back for a second stint after releasing him at the end of last season.
Sherwin, who scored two tries in Castleford's 34-18 win over the Catalans at Murrayfield earlier this month and was also in the side that won at Gilbert Brutus Stadium in March, is due to link up with his new team-mates this afternoon and train with them for the first time tomorrow morning.
Sherwin will be able to play in the Dragons' Carnegie Challenge Cup quarter-final at Batley Bulldogs on Saturday week because he missed Castleford's fourth-round defeat by Barrow Raiders through injury.
"I am very pleased that we have managed to sign Brent," said Catalans coach Kevin Walters.
"His arrival will give us a boost with the injury crisis we are in and we can finally bring in a playmaker for the first time since the departure of Adam Mogg.
"He's a player who has good knowledge of the game with his experience and also has a good pass and an excellent kicking game."
Catalans president Bernard Guasch said: "Brent Sherwin is probably the experienced player we were looking at in order to develop our game.
"We have worked for nearly two months to sign him and it's good for the club to be able to reach an agreement with Castleford."
Sherwin, whose appearance in Castleford's 40-24 defeat at Harlequins RL on Sunday was his 52nd for the club, was out of contract at the end of the season.
"I have enjoyed my time at the Tigers but this is a new opportunity for me and a fresh challenge," he said.
"I am hoping to play another season in Europe before returning home to Australia so I'll be doing my very best to win a longer deal with the Dragons.
"But I'll hold some good memories of Cas and would like to see them finish the season well - although not in a couple of weeks' time when they play Catalans!"
Tigers chief executive Richard Wright said: "Brent leaves with our best wishes.
"Catalans approached us a few weeks ago about taking him on board and they again enquired this week. Brent's contract with us was at its end at the close of the current season and, although he would have liked to have stayed, he could see the positives in this move.
"He wasn't in our plans for 2011 so the timing was right and this move will give him a chance to stake his claim for a longer deal with the Dragons.
"He has put in some match-winning performances for us and has played at times through injury but we are looking to make changes for next season and we couldn't have stood in his way when this opportunity arose."
Castleford have moved swiftly to bring in 20-year-old former Sheffield Eagles half-back or hooker Kyle Wood as a stop-gap replacement.
Wood joins the club on a one-month loan deal from Huddersfield Giants, although he has spent most of the season playing on a dual-registration with Batley.
Wright said: "We have brought in an immediate replacement in Kyle Wood and we will be exploring other options over the next couple of weeks.
"Kyle is a highly-regarded, exiting young player who is keen to make his mark in Super League."
Sherwin has been named in the Catalans' 19-man squad for Saturday's game at Gilbert Brutus Stadium.

Source: www.superleague.co.ukCastleford Tigers halted their slump to move two points clear of fellow Engage Super League strugglers Salford City Reds.
Castleford, who had lost five of their previous six home games this season, including last week's Carnegie Challenge Cup tie against Barrow, ground out a vital win in a scrappy game.
Joe Westerman was a major contributor with seven goals from seven kicks.
The Tigers welcomed back Australian scrum-half Brent Sherwin for his 50th appearance and prop Liam Higgins, who both missed the defeat against Barrow because of shoulder injuries.
Salford recalled winger Steve Tyrer in place of Jodie Broughton, sidelined after aggravating a shoulder injury.
The Reds survived an early onslaught after they were caught napping when the ball went into touch from Castleford's kick-off.
With half-backs Rangi Chase and Sherwin dictating play, the Tigers continued to make the running. And it was no surprise when they took a sixth-minute lead as slick handling by Chase and Sherwin made the opening for Ryan McGoldrick to glide through for a try that Westerman converted.
Castleford survived a let-off two minutes later when Sherwin slipped as he attempted to put in a clearance kick, but Ray Cashmere failed to gather the loose ball when the Reds had an overlap and a try was on the cards.
Salford were their own worst enemies as they gifted their opponents possession by losing the ball in their own half, but the Tigers failed to capitalise and were also guilty of handling errors as the game became increasingly scrappy in the wet conditions.
Salford's Stefan Ratchford made a promising half-break but the move fizzled out when he lost his footing.
Castleford dominated territory and missed a chance to increase their lead when Westerman was unable to hold McGoldrick's pass near the try line.
Westerman then kicked a 30th-minute goal after Ratchford was penalised for impeding Stuart Jones as he attempted to chase a charged-down kick.
Three minutes later, the Tigers loose-forward was on target again to make it 10-0 after the Reds were penalised for interference at a play the ball.
Salford hit back on the stroke of half-time after Chase lost the ball near his own posts, Daniel Holdsworth's clever chip-kick setting up a try for Ashley Gibson that Holdsworth converted to reduce the deficit to four points.
Castleford pressed strongly at the start of the second half and increased their lead when Ryan Hudson's deft pass sent Aussie prop Mitchell Sargent plunging over for a 54th-minute touchdown that Westerman converted.
Salford struck back nine minutes later when Gibson's crossfield kick led to Mark Henry scoring. Holdsworth added the extras to cut the gap to 16-12.
Just when the Tigers looked to be wobbling, they were given a huge lift when young full-back Jordan Thompson scored from Chase's well-placed kick and Westerman converted.
They sealed victory two minutes from time when Sherwin's kick set up a try for Stuart Jones, and Westerman added his seventh goal.
